CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 11, 2004
NCAA III WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
ST. PETERS, MO * Rebekah Weima's first trip to the three-day NCAA III Championships has already resulted in an All-American berth. A freshman at Calvin, Weima landed an All-America spot with a sixth place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:01.44. Weima was just three seconds behind Holly Hinz of Emory University who took first place with a time of 4:58.31.
A graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Weima had been seeded 33rd in the 500 freestyle heading into the national meet but in the prelims Thursday morning, Weima shattered he own school record in the event by more than 10 seconds as she clocked in with a time of 5:00.41.
Weima's time in the prelims was the second fastest swim of the morning and advanced her into the finals Thursday night where she placed sixth. Her finish is the highest-ever individual finish by a Calvin female swimmer at the national meet.
"Rebekah is off to a great national meet," said Calvin swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "She's only competed in the 500 freestyle a handful of times this year and for her to come up with a performance like this is phenomenal. She was right up with the leaders for nearly the entire race this evening and I'm extremely proud of her."
Weima will seek NCAA III All-America honors on Friday in the 200 freestyle where she is the top seed and on Saturday in the 100 freestyle where she is the second seed.
Calvin sophomore Abby Johnson of Grand Haven High School and senior Sara TerHaar of Bradenton, Florida also compete for the Knights on Thursday. Johnson swam in the 200 IM but did not advance out of the morning prelims as she finished 20th with a time of 2:10.63. TerHaar competed on the one-meter diving board and finished 22nd with a score of 240.0 points.
As a team, Calvin is 28th with 13 points heading into Friday's competition.
CALVIN ICE HOCKEY TEAM TO BE HONORED MARCH 17
The Calvin hockey team won a national championship this past weekend in Arizona. That title capped off a 29-1 season for the Knights! To mark this achievement there will be a celebration on Wednesday, March 17 at 9 pm in the Commons Dining Hall. The entire campus is invited. There will be some brief remarks at 9 pm and then there will be a showing of the national championship 5-0 win over the University of Georgia on a big-screen TV. Creative Dining will supply pop, chips, nachos, popcorn and other munchies for your viewing pleasure. There also will be a commemorative program available and, we hope, national championship t-shirts sold by the Bookstore. Come celebrate a great season for the hockey team!
