    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT for Tuesday, October 28, 2003

    MEN'S SOCCER
    Adrian * The red-hot Knights showed no chinks in their armor when they traveled to Adrian and notched their fifth shutout in their last six games and seventh of the season. The 5-0 victory gave the Knights sole possession of first place in the MIAA, one point ahead of Hope and two ahead of Kalamazoo.

    Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls Christian) got the Knights off to a quick start by scoring three goals in the first ten minutes of the match. Veldhouse's first came in the second minute from a Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian) pass. Matt Cosnek (Hopewell) assisted the second goal in the sixth minute, while Veldhouse did it all on his own to score his third, converting his first collegiate hat-trick. Geol Schierman (Broomfield) scored the fourth and final goal of the first half in the 14th minute, giving Cosnek his second assist of the day and the Knights a 4-0 lead at halftime.

    Jason Kastrounis (Quaker Valley) was the lone goal scorer in the second half when he scored an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute, making the final score 5-0. Calvin took 30 shots throughout the match, while Adrian could only blast two. Calvin goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian) went the entire game and made one save, while giving up no goals.

    Calvin, now on a nine-game winning streak, is the 16th ranked team in NCAA Division III standings and also stands as the second ranked team in the Great Lakes region. The defense has been the story for the last nine games, giving up only four goals and boasting six shutouts. The offense has also played a major role by giving the Knights a 30-4 goal advantage.

    Calvin will look to make it ten straight this Saturday when they host Olivet for Parent's Day at 1:30 p.m.
