CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2003

VOLLEYBALL

For the third straight year, Alma is the MIAA volleyball champion.

The Scots captured their third straight league title including their second
outright crown with a 35-33, 30-28, 30-20 victory at Calvin Wednesday night in
a battle of first place teams. The victory was Alma's fourth straight over
Calvin dating back to last year including its second straight over the Knights
at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

As the MIAA regular season champion, Alma (13-1 MIAA) also gains the top seed
and homecourt advantage for next week's MIAA Tournament. Calvin (12-2 MIAA)
will be the second seed for the MIAA Tournament and will host a first round
match Tuesday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Calvin will face either Albion
or St. Mary's. It marks the third straight year that Calvin has finished as a
league runner-up, one victory out of first place.

Calvin (24-7 overall) was not without its chances Wednesday evening as the
Knights battled back from a 17-12 deficit in game one to lead 28-26. Calvin
then had two chances to close out the game, leading 29-28 and later 31-30 but
the Knights were unable to gain the crucial two-point edge. Alma (25-6
overall) committed three service errors late in game one but the Knights were
unable to capitalize as Alma junior Caitlin Deis came up with three crucial
kills for the Scots to hold them in the game and eventually allow them to pull
out the 35-33 win.

In game two, Calvin again fell into a 17-12 hole, only to battle back to take a
22-20 lead. The Scots rallied with a 7-2 run to build a 27-22 lead. Calvin
answered with a 3-0 spurt of its own to tie the game at 27 but the Knights
would get no closer as the Scots picked up three of the final four points to
gain the two-point win.

In game three, Alma took hold of the momentum midway through with a 5-0 run to
build a 17-11 lead. The Scots never looked back from there in closing out the
match.

Calvin was led in defeat by freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) who collected 13
kills while junior Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) had 11 kills and three
blocks. Junior Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) had 18 digs with sophomore setter
Jill Scholten (Holland Christian HS) tossing out 39 assists.

Calvin finished with just a .182 hitting percentage however as the Scots
collected 67 digs and 13 blocks. Deis led the Alma offense with 14 kills while
junior Kristin Judson had 10 kills, 18 digs and four aces.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at a quadrangular at
DePauw with the Knights facing DePauw and Milliken during the afternoon.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

The MIAA race got a little tighter on Wednesday as Calvin handed Olivet a 2-0
defeat while Hope battled Alma to a 1-1 tie. The Calvin win and Hope tie
allowed the Knights to move into a tie for first place in the MIAA standings
with Hope (9-1-1 MIAA) as each team has 19 points. Hope has played one less
conference game than Calvin however and still holds its own destiny as it has
games remaining with Kalamazoo, Albion and Olivet while Calvin must face Adrian
and St. Mary's in conference play. The Knights have a non-conference game at
Ferris State Saturday afternoon.

Calvin's victory at Olivet Wednesday was its 10th straight including ninth
straight in conference play as the Knights improved to 11-4-1 overall and to
9-2-1 in the MIAA.

All of the scoring took place in the first half as sophomore Noell Berghuis
(Unity Christian HS) and freshman Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) scored
goals for the Knights. Berghuis picked up her fourth goal of the year,
converting a pass from freshman Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) in the 15th
minute of play. Weesies then scored her 16th goal of the year, whipping in a
pass from senior Sarah Derrico (Annondale, PA) in the 24th minute of play.

Calvin held a 20-5 shots at goal advantage with freshman goalkeeper Lisa
Campbell (Gull Lake HS) collecting her fifth shutout victory of the year.

Olivet (1-14-2 overall) was paced by goalkeeper Gretchen Ford who collected 10
