CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 27, 2003
Calvin Men's Soccer Team Gains First National Ranking Since 1991;
Knights 16th in Latest Poll
For the first time since 1991, the Calvin men's soccer team has cracked the national rankings.
In the latest Division III Top-25 poll released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), the Knights are ranked 16th after receiving honorable mention recognition a week ago. The ranking is Calvin's highest-ever and its first since 1991 when Calvin finished the year ranked 21st nationally.
Under the direction of 1992 Calvin graduate Chris Hughes, the Calvin men's soccer team is currently 12-4 overall and in first place in the MIAA standings with a 7-1-0 league mark. Calvin is the midst of a heated race for the MIAA title as Kalamazoo is 7-2-0 and Hope 6-1-1 with two weeks of the regular season left to play.
The Knights are owners of an eight-game win streak with five of the victories coming by shutout. In league games, Calvin currently leads the MIAA in scoring defense as the Knights have allowed just four goals through eight conference games.
In addition, the Knights are ranked second in the latest NSCAA Great Lakes Regional poll, up two spots from a week ago. Denison is currently ranked number-one in the Great Lakes Region. The Big Red are also ranked sixth in this week's national poll.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Adrian for a 3:00 p.m. match.
