CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2003 (Part Two)
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin took third at its own Midwest Invitational, falling to Palm Beach
Atlantic in a five-game thriller in the winner's bracket semifinals Saturday
afternoon before coming back to top cross-town rival Aquinas in three games in
the third place game.
Palm Beach Atlantic continued on to captured the tournament title, defeating
Alma in three straight games in the championship final by scores of 30-23,
30-21, 30-28.
In a 30-28, 30-26, 25-30, 25-30, 15-4 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic, Calvin
rallied from a 2-0 deficit in games before running out of gas in game five. A
year ago, Palm Beach Atlantic took ninth at the NAIA Championships. The
Sailfish are currently in the process of making the transition from NAIA to
NCAA III affiliation.
The loss to Palm Beach Atlantic snapped Calvin's ten-match win streak and
marked the first loss of the year for the Knights at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
Freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH), junior Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) and
senior Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) turned in big numbers in defeat. Kalb
posted a team-high 16 kills while Kuipers tallied a season-high 12 blocks along
with nine kills and four service aces. Kuipers is currently ranked third
nationally in blocks-per-game average. Balkema amassed a career-high 36 digs
in the loss, marking the third time this year that she has collected 30 or more
digs in a match this year. Sophomore setter Jill Scholten (Holland Christian
HS) added 48 assists and 14 digs with junior Kristn DEGroot (Tulare, CA)
chipping in with 19 digs.
Calvin (24-6) them came back to top Aquinas 30-25, 30-23, 30-25 in the third
place match. Kuipers had 13 kills and seven blocks to lead the Knights while
sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) had 12 kills and Kalb 10 kills.
Balkema had 18 digs with Scholten dishing out 40 assists.
Kuipers was then named to the Midwest Invitational All-Tournament team for the
second straight year. It marks the third all-tournament selection of the year
for Kuipers who has also received all-tournament honors at invitationals hosted
by Kalamazoo and Elmhurst this season.
Calvin will now prepare to battle for the MIAA title Wednesday night when it
hosts Alma at 6:30 p.m. at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Both teams are 12-1 in the
MIAA standings with the winner claiming the outright league title and home
court advantage for the MIAA Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 4-8. Calvin's only
conference defeat this year was a three-game defeat at Alma earlier this month.
Alma is the defending MIAA champion as the Scots finished 13-1 in 2002 with
Calvin finishing second at 12-2.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
ALLENDALE -- Both Calvin swimming and diving teams opened up their seasons on
Saturday, competing at the Grand Valley State Relays. In the women's
competition, Calvin took second in a field of four teams with 122 points with
host Grand Valley taking first with 142 points. In the men's competition,
Calvin was third in a field of four teams with 100 points, two points behind
second place Albion and 42 points behind first place Grand Valley.
In the women's competition, Calvin took first place in three relays and
established one meet record. The meet record came from Calvin's 300 yard
butterfly relay as the quartet of freshman Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian
HS) and sophomores Lynn Visser (Jenison HS) and Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS)
took first place with a time of 3:06.76.
Weima also led off Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team of Visser, freshman
Elizabeth Ingebrigtsen and Johnson that took first place wtih a time of
8:10.68. Calvin's 400 freestyle relay of Johnson, Visser, Ingebrigtsen and
Weima then took first place with a time of 3:45.05.
Calvin also performed well on the diving board with senior Sara TerHaar
(Bradenton, FL) taking third on the one-meter board (193.05) and second on the
three-meter board (218.35).
In the men's competition, Calvin took first place in two events and came away
with one meet record. The meet record came in the 400 medley relay as senior
Brad White (Traverse City), junior Ryan Preston (Richmond, IN), junior Peter
Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) and freshman Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
took first place wtih a time of 3:41.77.
Boumgarden, Tuuk, freshman Matt Herrema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and White
added a first place time of 7:24.59 in the 800 freestyle relay.
Both teams return to action next Saturday when they host MIAA dual meets
against Albion beginning at 1:00 p.m..
