CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (PART ONE) FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2003
MEN'S SOCCER
ALBION * Calvin moved into a first place tie in the MIAA standings with a 2-0 victory at Albion Saturday afternoon. Ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region, the Knights improved to 12-4 overall and to 7-1-0 in the MIAA. The victory was Calvin's eighth straight win and helped make amends for a 1-0 defeat at Albion a year ago.
Calvin is now tied for first place in the MIAA standings with Kalamazoo in points (14) but the Knights have played one less conference match than the Hornets.
All of the scoring took place in the first half as sophomore Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) and junior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) scored goals. Cosnek notched his sixth goal of the year, scoring in the 21st minute unassisted to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Veldhouse then picked up his team-leading ninth goal of the year, scoring in the 28th minute on a feed from senior Mike Standfest (Elk Rapids HS).
Calvin's defense held up the rest of the way, limiting the host Britons (6-8-1 overall, 4-4-0 MIAA) to only five shots at goal on the afternoon as the Knights posted their sixth shutout victory of the year. Sophomore Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) has been in goal for all six of the shutout wins. On Saturday, Westra collected one save and lowered his season goals-against-average to 0.89.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Adrian for a 3:00 p.m. contest.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin kept its win streak alive with an impressive 4-1 victory over visiting Albion Saturday afternoon in front of a Parent's Day crowd.
The victory was Calvin's ninth straight including its eighth consecutive win in conference play. In addition, it allowed Calvin to reach the double-digit plateau in victories for the 15th straight year as the Knights improved to 10-4-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the MIAA.
The Knights are now one point behind league-leading Hope although the Flying Dutch have played one less conference game than the Knights.
Albion (7-5-1 overall, 6-4-1 MIAA) scored first on Saturday as freshman Crystal DeGroot blasted a shot into the lower right hand corner in the 19th minute of play. The Albion goal marked the first time Calvin had trailed since a September 27 game at Alma * a span of more than 788 minutes.
Calvin came back to tie the game at one less than four minutes later as freshman Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) tapped in a shot into a wide-open net after receiving a pass from sophomore Noell Berhuis (Unity Christian HS). Weesies then collected her second goal of the game and 15th of the year less than three minutes later as she ripped in a shot from the left of the box with freshmen Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) and Jen Karas (Flushing HS) collecting assists on the play.
With just 2:16 left in the first half, Berghuis gave Calvin a 3-1 lead with a shot to the far post on a lead pass from Capel. The goal was the third of the year for Berghuis.
Capel then picked up her team-leading 16th goal of the year on a play midway through the second half as she popped a shot to the far post off a pass from freshman Jennifer Evans (Derry, PA).
Calvin finished the game with a 21-12 shots at goal advantage. Freshman Lisa Campbell (Gull Lake HS) picked up six saves in goal for the Knights while junior Annie Lerew had nine saves for Albion in goal.
