CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2003

    VOLLEYBALL

Calvin remained tied for first place in the MIAA standings and also moved into
the winner's bracket semifinals of its own Midwest Invitational Friday at the
Calvin Fieldhouse with a pair of victories.

Calvin opened the tournament with a first round (30-23, 30-23, 30-25) victory
over Adrian that also counted as an MIAA conference match. The league win
allowed the Knights to maintain pace with MIAA co-leader Alma College as the
    Scots defeated Kalamazoo 24-30, 30-18, 30-20, 22-30, 15-12 in a first round
contest that also counted as a league match.

Both teams are now 12-1 in the MIAA and will meet next Wednesday night at the
Calvin Fieldhouse to decide the MIAA Championship. Wednesday's match will
start at 6:30 p.m. and will mark the regular season finales for both teams.

Alma and Calvin could face each other Saturday at the Midwest Invitational but
if it occurs, it will be as a non-conference match. Alma also reached the
semifinals of the winner's bracket with a three-game victory over Hanover in
the Maroon Division of the Midwest Invitational. Calvin advanced to the
semifinals with a 30-12, 30-19, 30-20 victory over North Park in a pool play
    match of the Black Division.

Calvin has now won 10 consecutive matches and is 7-0 at home this year. The
Knights will face a stiff test in Saturday's winner's bracket semifinal as
they will face Palm Beach Atlantic College (FL) a club that finished ninth at
the 2002 NAIA National tournament. Alma will meet Aquinas in the other
    winner's bracket semifinal Saturday.

In its victory over Adrian, Calvin junior Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS)
tallied 16 kills, seven blocks and four service aces to lead the Knights.
Sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) had 13 kills with freshman
Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) collecting 11 kills. Sophomore setter Jill Scholten
(Holland Christian HS) had 18 assists, 10 digs and three aces with senior
    libero Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN)
posting 18 digs and junior Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) 12 digs.

Against North Park, Kuipers led Calvin with 12 kills and four blocks while
Hendricks had nine kills. Scholten also tallied 38 assists.

Palm Beach Atlantic reached Saturday's winner's bracket semifinals with
    three-game victories over Albion (30-8, 30-20, 30-8) and Anderson (30-18,
    30-27, 30-17).
