    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2003

    VOLLEYBALL

    Calvin stretched its win streak to eight and moved back into a tie for first
    place in the MIAA standings with a 30-5, 30-16, 30-18 victory over visiting
    Olivet Thursday evening at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

    Now 21-5 overall and 11-1 in the MIAA, Calvin is tied for first place in the
    conference standings with Alma. The Knights are now also 5-0 at home in 2003.

    Junior Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) paced the Knights with 12 kills and
    five blocks. Kuipers is currently third nationally in blocks-per-game with an
    average of 1.68. Freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) was next with 11 kills and
    four service aces while sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) had 10
    kills and a career-high eight service aces.

    Junior Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) and senior Trisha Balkema (Tulare, CA)
    added 11 and 17 digs respectively while sophomore setter Jill Scholten (Holland
    Christian HS) tossed out 36 assists. Scholten is currently ninth in the latest
    set of NCAA III statistics in assists-per-game average (12.35).

    Calvin will now prepare for a busy weekend as the Knights host the Midwest
    Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Calvin's first
    round match against Adrian will also double as an MIAA conference match. Alma
    and Kalamazoo will also meet in a first round match Friday afternoon that will
    also count as an MIAA contest. The Alma-Kalamazoo match is set for 3:00 p.m.
    while the Calvin-Adrian match is set for 4:30 p.m.

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

    The latest set of NCAA Division III cross country rankings were released
    earlier this week and the Calvin men's cross country team has moved all the way
    up to the number-two spot while the Calvin women's cross country team remains
    ranked sixth. Wisconsin-Oshkosh remains the top-ranked team in the men's poll.
     Last Saturday, Calvin battled Wisconsin-Oshkosh to a first place tie of 36
    points at the Titans' own Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational. The Calvin women's
    cross country team tied host Wisconsin-Oshkosh for second place in last
    Saturday's race with a team score of 49 points.

    Both Calvin teams are in the midst of bye weeks and will return to action next
    Saturday when they compete at the MIAA Championships hosted by Albion at the
    Whiffletree Golf Course.
