CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2003
VOLLEYBALL
HOLLAND -- A three-game sweep at rival Hope Thursday night allowed Calvin to
move back into a tie for first place in the MIAA standings with defending
champion Alma. Calvin (17-5 overall, 9-1 MIAA) came up with key plays in games
one and two and then rolled in game three in collecting the 32-30, 30-28, 30-23
over the host Flying Dutch (14-9 overall, 8-3 MIAA).
The victory was Calvin's third consecutive win over Hope at the Dow Center and
its fifth consecutive win over Hope overall.
In game one, Calvin was able to build a 21-16 lead only to see Hope roar back
with a 9-4 run to tie the game at 25. Hope had a chance to serve for the
game-one victory, leading 29-28 but the Knights responded by scoring the next
two points to take a 30-29 lead. After Hope tied the game at 30, junior Megan
VanDommelen (Sheboygan, WI) came up with a big kill to give the Knights a 31-30
lead and moments later, Calvin came up with the game-winning point.
In game two, Calvin raced out to a 23-14 lead only to see Hope come back again,
this time on the strength of a 9-1 run that moved the Flying Dutch to within a
point at 24-23. With Calvin leading 28-25, Hope scored three unanswered points
to tie the game but a pivotal kill by Calvin junior middle-hitter Kara Kuipers
(Unity Christian HS) ignited a final 2-0 burst that closed out the game two win
for the Maroon and Gold.
In game three, Calvin took an 8-7 lead and never trailed again as the Knights
outscored the Flying Dutch 11-6 down the stretch to close out the match.
Freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) was superb for the Knights throughout the
match, collecting 16 kills and six digs while Kuipers had 12 kills. Sophomore
Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) added nine kills and four blocks while
senior libero Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) had 23 digs and sophomore setter
Jill Scholten (Holland Christian HS) 43 assists.
Hope was led by senior Katie Hall and sophomore Julie VanderSlice with 12 kills
apiece.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes in a triangular hosted by
Tri-State that will also include Kalamazoo. Calvin will face Tri-State in a
non-conference match and then face Kalamazoo in a key conference match. In the
first meeting of the year between Calvin and Kalamazoo, the Knights prevailed
in a thrilling five-game match. Saturday's triangular is set to begin at 1:00
p.m.
