CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 13, 2003

CALVIN ATHLETES RECEIVE MIAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK ACCOLADES

A record six Calvin athletes have received MIAA Player of the Week honors for
their efforts this past week for Calvin fall sports teams. Calvin athletes who
have been so honored include senior Trisha Balkema (volleyball), sophomore
Peter Malefyt (men's soccer), sophomore Karla VanBeveren (women's soccer)
and freshmen Leah Scholten, Jill Capel and Tricia DeVries (all in women's
soccer). All six Calvin athletes are receiving MIAA Player of the Week honors
for the first time in their careers.

A native of Lansing and a graduate of Lansing Christian High School, Malefyt
spurred a Calvin defense that allowed just one goal last week as the Knights
moved into a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA standings with Hope and
Kalamazoo. Calvin opened the week with a 5-1 victory at Olivet and then
returned home Saturday to edge rival Hope 1-0. A right wing marking back,
Malefyt is in his first full season on the Calvin varsity and has started in
all 12 games this year for the Knights. Calvin is currently 8-4-0 overall and
4-1-0 in the MIAA. The Knights return to action on Tuesday when they travel to
    Alma for a 4:00 p.m. game.

Balkema is from Highland, Indiana. She is also a graduate of Illiana
Christian High School. A two-year starter at the libero position, was credited
    with a career-best 30 digs in a five-game victory at Saint Mary's last Tuesday
night. She did not commit an error in the match. A year ago, Balkema finished
among the nation's leaders in digs and was named the MIAA's Defensive
Player of the Year. Calvin (16-5 overall) is currently tied for the MIAA lead
with Alma at 8-1 while Hope is close behind at 8-2. Calvin travels to Hope on
Thursday for an MIAA match scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

In women's soccer, Jill Capel has been named MIAA Offensive Player of the
Week while VanBeveren, Scholten and DeVries share the MIAA Defensive Player of
the Week award. Capel hails from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity
Christian High School. This past week, Capel scored four goals and assisted on
another as the Knights defeated Adrian 7-0 Tuesday and Hope 3-1 on Saturday.
In the win over Adrian, Capel picked up her first collegiate hat-trick. The
freshman forward is currently second on the Calvin team in scoring with 11
goals, five assists and 27 points and is second in the MIAA in scoring with
nine goals, four assists and 22 points.

Scholten, DeVries and VanBeveren have formed a strong Calvin backline on
defense since moving into the starting lineup as a group three weeks ago.
Since forming a unit together, Calvin has gone 5-0 and allowed just three goals
during that streak. Scholten is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity
Christian High School. DeVries is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand
Rapids Chrsitian High School. VanBeveren hails from Ancaster, Ontario. She is
a graduate of Hamilton District Christian High School.

The Calvin women's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday when it
travels to Tri-State for a non-conference game scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
The Knights are currently 6-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the MIAA, good for third
place in the current MIAA standings. Calvin also has a current five-game win
    streak.
