CALVIN SOCCER TEAMS SWEEP HOPE/HUIZENGA SHATTERS CALVIN GOLF RECORD
Women's Soccer
Calvin's unbeaten streak at home is very much alive while Hope's unbeaten streak has come to an end. With a 3-1 victory over the visiting Flying Dutch Saturday afternoon, Calvin extended its unbeaten streak at home to 15 games, dating back to the tail end of the 2001 season. During that span, Calvin is 14-0-1 at home including 4-0 in 2003. Calvin's victory over Hope also marked the first defeat of the year for the Flying Dutch who slipped to 10-1-1 overall but still remain atop the MIAA standings at 7-1-0 in league play.
Calvin is now in third place in the MIAA standings at 5-2-1 in league play, three points behind Hope and one point behind second place St. Mary's.
A large crowd witnessed the Calvin victory as the Knights (6-4-1 overall-) scored a pair of late second half goals to pull away for the win. Sophomore Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian HS) put the Knights on the board first as she ripped in a shot from the 18 that deflected off a defender and into the far right hand corner of the Hope goal 11:44 into the match. The Flying Dutch came back to tie the game in the 20th minute as senior Catie Neidlinger flicked in a header over the head of Calvin goalkeeper Lisa Campbell (Gull Lake HS. The play originated on a corner kick taken by Hope junior Dawn Gilliam.
Calvin picked up the pace in the second half and finally broke through with just 15:19 left in regulation as junior Linnea Butler (Shelton, WA) was able to carry the ball into the edge of the box and chip a ball that squirted through a mass of players in the goalmouth. The Butler chip ended right on the foot of freshman striker Sarah Weeesies and the Kalamazoo Christian High School graduate made no mistake as she tapped the ball into a wide-open net.
Weesies then set up the clinching goal as she served a ball into the left edge of the Hope box just over two minutes later to freshman teammate Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) who had broken free. While sliding to the turf, Capel was able to slip a shot past Hope goaltender Holly Nestle into the net to provide the Knights with a two-goal lead.
The goal by Weesies proved to be her third game-winner of the year and was also her team-leading 12th goal of the year. The goal by Capel was her 11th of the year.
Calvin finished the match with a 17-9 shots at goal advantage with Campbell collecting three saves in goal for the Knights.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it journeys to Tri-State for a non-conference match slated to start at 4:00 p.m.

Calvin snapped a four-match losing skid to Hope and in the process, created a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA standings Saturday afternoon.
In front of an overflow crowd of more than 500 fans, Calvin edged the visiting Flying Dutchmen 1-0 to improve to 8-4-0 overall, and more importantly to 4-1-0 in the MIAA. The Knights are now locked in a three-way tie for first place with Hope and Kalamazoo in the MIAA standings.
The victory was Calvin's first over Hope since the 2000 regular season finale and also marked the first win for head coach Chris Hughes against the Flying Dutchmen.
Freshman Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS) provided the only goal of the game as the first-year midfielder scored in the 67th minute of play on a pretty set-up pass from junior midfielder Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD). On the play, Veldhouse slid a back-pass to Capisciolto in the slot who responded by lofting a shot into the top shelf of the Hope net, sending the large crowd into a frenzy. The goal was the sixth of the year for Capisciolto and proved to be his third game-winner of the season. Veldhouse also picked up his team-leading eighth assist of the year on the play.
Hope (7-3-2 overall) pressed the attack in the closing minutes and nearly connected in the final 10 seconds of play but a shot to the far post slid just wide, allowing the Knights to escape with the win.
Hope entered the match ranked sixth in the latest Great Lakes Regional rankings while Calvin was ranked 10th.
Calvin finished with a 10-4 shots at goal advantage with sophomore goaltender Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) collecting one save in gaining his third shutout of the season and fourth of his collegiate career.
Westra was particularly sharp in the first half when Hope threatened on a handful of opportunities with Westra stepping in front to punch out a number of dangerous Hope serves into the Calvin box.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Alma for an MIAA contest slated to start at 4:00 p.m.

In addition, Huizenga moved into 12th place in the final MIAA individual standings to claim the final spot on the All-MIAA second team. Huizenga finished the year with an MIAA season average of 91.0 strokes-per-round. Huizenga's average is a new Calvin single-season record, surpassing the previous Calvin record of 92.0 strokes-per-round established in the MIAA's inaugural season of women's golf in 1991. Huizenga is also the first Calvin women's golfer to received all-conference accolades since Kara Hugen was named to the All-MIAA second team in 1998.
Alma's Courtney Reinhardt and Stefanie Simmerman of St. Mary's shared the MIAA medalist honors with season averages of 82.8 strokes-per-round. Kristyn Buhl of Kalamazoo captured medalist honors for the two-day league tournament with a total of 157 strokes.
Calvin's second-best finisher at the MIAA Championships was junior Dawn Svenkeson (Scandia, MN) who fired a round of 87 to finish 13th in the individual standings over the weekend with a two-day total of 180. Svenkeson also finished 20th in the final league standings with an average of 94.2 strokes-per-round, good for seventh place on the all-time Calvin list.
Other Calvin Finishers on Saturday included junior Margaret Tassaro (Carnegie, PA) with a 97, sophomore Linnea Vincenet (Grand Rapids Chrsitian HS) with a 108, freshman Abby Stemler (Elk River, MN) with a 110 and sophomore Anne Prins (Unity Christian HS) with a round of 115. Tassaro finished tied for 24th at the MIAA Championships and 30th in the final MIAA season standings. Vincent finished 35th at the MIAA Championships with Prins finishing 39th and Stemler 40th.
"We feel very good about the way we played this weekend, particularly with our performance today," said Calvin women's golf coach Jerry Bergsma. "We met our goal of improving as a team from last year. It's also exciting to see Annie Huizenga break a school record. She's just a sophomore and she gets better every year."
