    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 3, 2003 (PART TWO)

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

    NOTRE DAME, IN -- A pair of top-five team finishes were not enough to keep the
    nationally-ranked Calvin cross country teams from minor upsets Friday afternoon
    in the Blue Divisions of the Notre Dame Invitational.

    In the men's Gold Division race, second-ranked Calvin took third with 66 points
    but were surpassed by 7th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point which took first place
    honors with 52 points while the Notre Dame "B" team took second with a score of
    57 points.

    Friday's competitions were held on Notre Dame's Burke Memorial Golf Course
    under cold, wet and muddy conditions.

    Senior David Haagsma (South Christian HS) had a sparkling performance for the
    Knights, taking first place in a time of 25:14 but Stevens-Point was close
    behind with runners in second and third place. Calvin's second man on Friday
    was junior Jeff Engbers (Whitinsville, MA) who placed 13th in 25:40 with
    freshman teammate Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) right behind in 14th place
    (25:41). Senior Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) was next for the Maroon and Gold,
    placing 17th with a time of 25:46 while junior Andy Yazzie (Rehoboth, NM) was
    21st in 25:52 and senior Kris Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) 23rd in 25:54.
     

    Rounding out Calvin's finishers were senior Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) in
    33rd (26:04); freshman Ben Hammer (Elk Rapids) in 37th (26:08) and senior Brian
    Paff (National City, CA) in 38th (26:13).

    In the women's Gold Division race, third-ranked Calvin took second with 101
    points with 10th-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh edging the Knights with a total of 96
    points. In its race last Saturday at the MIAA Jamboree, Calvin's time-gap
    between its first and fifth runners was just 1:04 but in Friday's race, it was
    1:14.

    Seniors Sarah Hastings (Traverse City Central HS) and Jessie Lair (Southfield
    Christian HS)continued to provide a formidable one-two punch for the Knights as
    Hastings took second overall (18:09) and Lair third (18:12). Liz Woodworth of
    Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the meet winner in 17:23.

    Sophomore Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was again strong for
    Calvin as she placed 14th in 18:41 while sophomore Lindsay Kroonenberg (Denver,
    CO) was 38th in 19:08 and senior Tami VerMeulen (Holland Christian HS) 44th in
    19:15.

    Rounding out Calvin's finishers were freshman Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids
    Christian HS) in 19:18; freshman Laura Holtrop (Derwood, MD) in 55th (19:26);
    freshman Bethany Hofman (Holland Christian HS) in 62nd (19:33) and freshman
    Christine Witte (Holland Christian HS) 80th in 19:53.

    In the men's unattached race, 2003 Calvin graduate Joel Klooster of Chatham,
    Ontario, took first place in a time of 25:40. Calvin finishers in the race
    included junior Aaron Iverson (Radnor, OH) in seventh (26:28); freshman Paul
    Rollett (Chatham, IL) in 10th (26:35) and sophomore Harrison Jorritsma
    (Beamsville, ON) in 12th (26:43).

    In the women's unattached race, Calvin sophomore Jen Walter (Sharon, MA) was
    eighth (20:01), freshman Melissa Vandenberg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was
    10th (20:09) and freshman Lydia Singer (Wilmingt, DE) was 18th (20:55).

    Both Calvin teams return to action next Friday when the compete at the Michigan
    Intercollegiates at the Rolling Hills Golf Course in Hudsonville. The
    invitational will be hosted by Grand Valley State University with the first
    race set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
