    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 3, 2003 (Part 1)

    MEN'S SOCCER
    Grand Rapids * Calvin looked to stay above .500 on the season and did so successfully against the Adrian College Bulldogs. Calvin moved to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA with the 10-2 victory while the Bulldogs fell to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the MIAA.
    The first half featured a scoring frenzy by the Knights, starting just 15:48 into the match when Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian) volleyed a Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls Christian) pass into the back of the net. Matt Cosnek (Hopewell) made the lead 2-0 just under four minutes later off another Veldhouse assist. Veldhouse finally joined the scoring action in the 21st minute when scored from a Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa East) pass. David Buursma (Western Michigan Christian) scored his first goal of the season in the 30th minute off a feed from David Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian). Jason Kastrounis (Quaker Valley) scored in the 34th minute on a header and was fed by Scott McPheeters (Carman-Ainsworth). Holwerda scored an unassisted goal in the 40th minute. Kastrounis scored his second in the 42nd minute from a Buursma assist. Dave DeBoer scored 20 seconds last with no assist. John VanWylen (Grand Rapids Christian) finished the first half scoring in the 44th minute wi!
    th an unassisted goal. The Knights accumulated 29 shots and kept Adrian from shooting.
    In the 61st minute, the Bulldogs scored their first goal, and just 59 seconds later scored their second. DeBoer finished off the night's scoring in the 78th minute to make the final score 10-2.
    Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian) and David Shier (Niles) split the goalkeeping duties half and half. Westra gave up no goals and made no saves while Shier gave up two goals and made two saves.
    Calvin will be back on the pitch this Wednesday when they travel to Olivet for another MIAA match, set to begin at 4:00.

    MEN'S GOLF
            In the rainy weather, the Aquinas Fall Invitational still made it way through to the end. Calvin finished sixth in the eight team field with a team score of 348. Winning the invite was Spring Arbor University with a 322. SAU was closely followed by league rival Madonna who had a score of 326. Host Aquinas finished in third with a 329, while Hope finished in fourth at 334. Cornerstone accumulated a score of 336, good for fifth place. Olivet hit 348 strokes and Davenport reported no team score.
            Calvin was led by Matt Kelly who shot an 82. Freshmen Tim VanVugt (88), Ben Buteyn (89), and Matt VanTil (89) were the other scorers for the Knights.
