CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2003
MEN'S GOLF
ADRIAN -- Calvin used another strong effort to move into second place in the
overall MIAA season standings at a league tournament hosted by Adrian at the
Lenawee Country Club Saturday afternoon.
Calvin posted a second place team score of 313, four strokes behind first place
Hope but 13 strokes better than third place Olivet. The second place
performance allowed the Knights to move nine strokes ahead of Olivet and into
second place in the MIAA team standings.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Jim Timmer Jr. the Calvin men's
golf team has now posted four second place team finishes at MIAA outings this
year.
Ricky Shilts (Kalamazoo Central HS) found the Lenawee Country Club links to his
liking as the Calvin junior fired a round of 73 to capture medalist honors
Saturday afternoon. Shilts is the first Calvin medalist since Adam Derrickson
and Bryan Hoekstra shared medalist honors for Calvin at a league tournament
hosted by the Knights in 2001.
Shilts was followed by teammate Phil Rietema (Grand Rapids Baptist HS) who had
a sterling round of 76. Rounding out Calvin's finshers were seniors Ryan
Brandsma (Hinsdale, IL) and Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian HS) with
rounds of 82 while freshman Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian HS) had a round
of 86.
The MIAA season is set to conclude on Monday when Calvin hosts the final league
outing of the year. The outing will be held at the Watermark Country Club in
Grand Rapids with opening tee times set for 1:00 p.m.
Calvin will be bidding for its best MIAA season finish since 2000 when the
Knights finished second in the final league standings.
