CALVIN SPORTS REPORTS FOR MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2003
WOMEN'S SOCCER
For the first time in her collegiate career, Calvin College freshman Sarah
Weesies has been named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in women's soccer.
A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School,
Weesies scored four goals and assisted on another in leading Calvin to
conference victories over Kalamazoo and Albion last week.
In a 6-0 win over Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon, Weesies notched a hat-trick and
assisted on two others including Calvin's opening goal that came just 1:34
into the match. In a 3-1 victory at Albion Saturday, Weesies delivered the
game-winning goal as she ripped in a shot with just over 23 minutes left in
regulation to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. In the first half, Weesies gained
an assist on a goal scored by fellow freshman forward Jill Capel that had given
the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Weesies leads Calvin in goals, assists and points with eight goals, four
assists and 20 points. In conference games, she is tied for the MIAA lead in
points (14) and second in goals (5) and assists (4).
Calvin is currently 3-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the MIAA which leaves the
Knights tied for third place in the league standings with St. Mary's.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Olivet at 4:00 p.m.
MEN'S TENNIS
A trio of individuals represented Calvin at the ITA Division III Central
Region Championships this weekend on the campus of DePauw University in
Greencastle, Indiana.
The ITA National Small College Championships began in 1986 and is perhaps the
most unique event in all of collegiate athletics. It annually crowns men's and
women's singles and doubles national champions in NCAA Divisions II and III,
NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.
Highlighting the weekend for the Knights was the performance of the Calvin
doubles team of junior Kevin VanHaitsma (Unity Christian HS) and freshman Dan
Volkema (Holland Christian HS) as the duo reached the semi-quarterfinals out of
an original field of 64 teams.
VanHaitsma and Volkema opened the tournament with a 9-7 pro-set victory over a
team from Principia and then advanced to the semi-quarters with a 6-3, 6-2 win
over a team from Heidelberg. In the semi-quarters, VanHaitsma and Volkema
dropped a heart-breaker, falling 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 to a team from Wittenberg.
In singles play, VanHaitsma drew a first-round bye and then suffered a 2-6,
6-4, 7-5 defeat to Tyler Hanson from Principia College. Volkema and junior Jon
Miedema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also drew first round assignments with
Volkema falling 6-3, 6-1 to Cam Bagley of Rose-Hulman Institute and Miedema
falling 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 to Don Martinez of Augustana College.
The Calvin men's tennis team is under the direction of first-year head coach
John Ross. Ross is also the new head coach of the Calvin women's basketball
team.
