CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURUDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2003 PART TWO
WOMEN'S SOCCER
ALBION * Calvin got rid of a giant monkey hanging on its back with a 3-1 victory at three-time defending MIAA champion Albion College Saturday afternoon. The victory was Calvin's first road win of the season and its first at Albion since 1998.
Over the last two years, Calvin has posted just a 4-10-2 mark on the road including an 0-4-1 record this year heading into Saturday's match.
A determined Calvin effort proved to be the difference however as the Knights scored a pair of goals in the final 24 minutes of regulation to pull away for the win. Freshman Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) opened the scoring with a goal in the 21st minute of play as her left-footed shot beat Albion goalkeeper Emily Crisman to the near post with freshman Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play.
Just over three minutes later, Albion knotted the score as Sarah Pike sent a long wind-blown chip shot that sailed over the head of Calvin freshman goalkeeper Lisa Campbell (Gull Lake HS).
The game remained tied at one until the 67th minute of play when Capel sent a well-placed through-ball into the Albion penalty box that Weesies was able to collect and fire into the lower right-hand corner of the net.
With 11 minutes left in regulation, Capel struck for his second goal of the game and sixth of the season as she took a long chip from freshman Tricia DeVries (Grand Rapids Christian HS) on one hop and fired a shot top shelf into the right hand corner of the Albion goal.
Sophomore Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian HS) nearly scored another goal for Calvin in the closing minutes on a goalmouth scramble but Crisman was able to make a diving save to keep another Calvin shot from finding the back of the net.
Calvin (3-4-1 overall) finished the afternoon with a 17-13 shots at goal advantage with Campbell collecting six saves for the Knights and Crisman nine saves for the Britons (3-5-0 overall).
The victory also allowed the Knights to move into a third place with St. Mary's in the MIAA standings, one point ahead of fifth place Albion and Kalamazoo.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Olivet at 4:00 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER
KALAMAZOO * An early first half goal by host Kalamazoo proved to be the only goal of the game as the defending MIAA co-champions held on for a 1-0 victory over Calvin Saturday afternoon.
The win was Kalamazoo's second straight 1-0 decision over the Knights as the Hornets also won by the same verdict in the season finale for both teams last November.
Nick Houdek provided the winning goal for the Hornets, heading in a pass from Steven Dendler 15 minutes into the match.
Calvin threatened in the closing minutes but could never find the back of the net as the Knights remained winless on the road this fall. Kalamazoo (4-1-3 overall, 1-0 MIAA) outshot Calvin 10-7 with Nick Carlin-Voigt collecting five saves for the Hornets and Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) five saves for the Knights.
