    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2003

    MEN'S GOLF

    KALAMAZOO -- Calvin maintained its third place position in the MIAA standings
    with a second place finish at an MIAA outing hosted by Kalamazoo at the Lake
    Doster Golf Club Thursday afternoon.

    Calvin posted a team score of 319, one stroke ahead of third place Olivet and
    16 strokes behind first place Hope which widened its lead in the overall
    standings over Olivet to 18 strokes. Meanwhile, Calvin moved to within 13
    strokes of second place Olivet and 21 strokes ahead of fourth place Alma.

    Playing near his hometown, Calvin freshman Jeff TenBrink of Kalamazoo Christian
    High School led the Knights with a round of 76 that placed him in a three-way
    tie for third place individually on Thursday. Senior Phil Rietema (Grand
    Rapids Baptist HS) continued his steady play for the Knights with a round of 79
    that placed him in a three-way tie for 12th place.

    Rounding out Calvin's finishers were senior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan
    Christian HS) and junior Mike Bratt (Lynden, WA) with rounds of 82 while junior
    Ricky Shilts (Kalamazoo Central HS) had a round of 83.

    Ryan Shedd of Hope was Thursday's medalist with a round of 69.

    Rietema is now tied for fifth place in the MIAA individual standings at 77.3
    strokes-per-round while Bratt is tied for seventh with an average of 78.5
    strokes-per-round. Kelly is also in the top-12 as his average of 79.9 SPR
    ranks him 11th individually.

    Calvin returns to action next Monday when it competes at an MIAA outing hosted
    by Hope at the Clearbrook Golf Club in Saugutuck. The outing was originally
    scheduled for this past Monday but was postponed because of weather. Next
    Monday's outing will begin at 1:00 p.m.

    VOLLEYBALL

    The latest set of NCAA III statistics have been release for volleyball and
    Calvin is ranked nationally in a number of categories. Individually, Calvin
    sophomore Jill Scholten ranks 10th nationally in assists-per-game average
    (12.55) while junior middle-hitter Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) ranks 22nd
    in blocks-per-game (1.54).

    As a team, Calvin ranks 26th in hitting percentage (.273), 15th in
    kills-per-game (15.07) and ninth in assists-per-game (14.12).

    Calvin returns to action on Friday when it opens play at the Wittenberg
    Invitational in Springfield, Ohio. Calvin's first opponent will be a Defiance
    team that will carry a 12-0 record into Friday's match (2:00 p.m.).

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER

    A pair of soccer games are set for RealAudio broadcasts this Saturday. At
    noon, Calvin sports information director Jeff Febus will broadcast the women's
    soccer at Albion. Immediately following the completion of the women's game,
    Josh Miller and Ross Weener of the Calvin Sports Information Department will
    broadcast the men's soccer game at Kalamazoo (2:00 p.m. start time).
