CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2003
VOLLEYBALL
SPRINGFIELD, OH -- Calvin split a pair of matches on the first day of
competition at the Wittenberg Invitational Friday afternoon. Calvin opened the
tournament with a five-game loss to an undefeated team from Defiance, falling
30-25, 30-28, 28-30, 24-30, 19-17. The Knights then came back to defeat Ithaca
(NY) in four games 29-31, 31-29, 30-22, 30-20.
Calvin is now 12-3 overall and will face nationally-ranked Wittenberg at 11:30
a.m. Saturday. The Knights will play a second match Saturday afternoon against
an opponent to be determined.
In the loss to Defiance, Calvin was led in defeat by junior middle-hitter Kara
Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) who racked up 21 kills and nine blocks while
freshman hitter Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) had 18 kills, 11 digs and three service
aces. Senior Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) added 41 digs while sophomore
setter Jill Scholten (Holland Christian HS) had 64 assists.
In the win over Ithaca, Kuipers had 14 kills and 12 blocks while sophomore
middle hitter Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) had 12 kills and six blocks.
Scholten had 42 assists and Balkema 21 digs.
