CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 24, 2003

    MEN'S SOCCER

Grand Rapids - The Tri-State Thunder (1-6) brought some gloomy weather to
Calvin Field for their non-league match with Calvin College (4-3), but the
Knights eluded the gloom and went home with a 4-1 victory behind the likes of
junior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls Christian) who finished with a goal and two
    assists.

The Knights started scoring in the eighth minute as Joel VandeKopple (Grand
Rapids Christian) slid and chipped the ball just over the hand of the keeper
and put the Knights up 1-0, that goal assisted by Veldhouse and David Buursma
(Western michigan Christian). Freshman Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian)
knocked in his third of the season in the 35th minute on another Veldhouse
assist. Just eight minutes later, Veldhouse scored a goal of his own on a
direct kick just outside the box. Calvin won the shot category 13-2 in the
first half and went to the locker room up 3-0.

Tri-State came out quick in the second half and gave the Knights a momentary
fright as they scored just 2 minutes and 10 seconds in to cut the deficit to
3-1. That would be the last of the Thunder pressure as they were outshot 20-2
in the second half. Sophomore Kurt Visker (Grand Rapids Christian) added an
insurance goal in the 80th minute, unassisted, to put the Knights up 4-1 for
    good.

Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian) went the distance for
the Knights and gave up one goal while accumulating three saves.

Calvin will be back in action this Saturday at Kalamazoo with the game starting
    at 2:00 p.m.

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Both Calvin cross country teams remain near the top of the latest set of NCAA
    III Top-25 cross country polls.

In the men's poll, Calvin vaulted into second place in this week's national
poll and also received one of a possible seven first place votes. The Knights
were ranked third in last week's poll and fourth in the poll prior to that.
North Central (IL) received six first place votes to grab the top spot in this
week's poll. The Cardinals edged the Knights by five points to win the
Wisconsin-Parkside Midwest Invitational this past Saturday.

In the women's poll, Calvin is ranked fourth for the second straight week,
trailing top-ranked Williams (MA), second-ranked Middlebury (VT) and
    third-ranked Wartburg (IA).

Both Calvin cross country teams return to action this Saturday at an MIAA
jamboree hosted by Adrian College. In the men's race, Calvin will be one of
two nationally-ranked teams as Albion is ranked 20th in this week's national
    poll.
