Calvin used its home field to its advantage once again as the Knights rolled to a 6-0 victory over conference rival Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field. The victory was Calvin's first of the year in MIAA play and its second overall.
Freshmen forwards Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) proved to be a lethal passing combination throughout the match as Capel finished with a goal and two assists while Weesies notched three goals and two assists. The three-goal effort marked the first collegiate hat-trick for Weesies who leads the Knights in scoring with seven goals and three assists on the year.
Capel put the Knights (2-4-1 overall, 1-2-1 MIAA) on the board just 1:34 into the contest after a receiving a pass from Weesies in the Kalamazoo box. Senior Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) then whipped in her third goal of the year to give the Knights a 2-0 lead in the 15th minute of play. Haan's shot came off a rebound blast from Weesies.
In the second half, Weesies exploded for three goals in a six-minute span to put the game out of reach. Her first goal game on an unassisted rush up the middle 12 minutes into the second half. Two minutes later Capel fed Weesies for a tap-in to the far post and shortly after, Weesies slammed in a crossing pass from sophomore Kara Zuidema (Escondido, CA).
Freshman Jennifer Evans (Derry, PA) scored Calvin's final goal, converting a pass from Capel with just 14 minutes left in regulation.
