JOEL VANDE KOPPLE NAMED MIAA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK IN MEN'S SOCCER
GRAND RAPIDS - For the second time in his collegiate career, Calvin junior
midfielder Joel Vande Kopple has been named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School,
Vande Kopple scored three goals and assisted on another in leading Calvin to a
pair of victories in the Cal Bergsma Memorial Invitational last weekend. The
pair of victories allowed the Knights to captured the tournament title.
In a 2-1 victory over visiting Wilmington College of Ohio last Friday
afternoon, Vande Kopple scored Calvin's first goals and then assisted on the
game-winner with just 1:48 left in regulation. He then scored a pair of goals
in Calvin's 4-0 triumph over visiting Anderson University of Indiana on
Saturday.
Vande Kopple is currently tied for the team lead in scoring with three goals
and two assists for a total of eight points.
Ranked ninth in the Great Lakes Region, Calvin is currently 3-0 on the season
and is preparing for a rugged stretch of games on the road this week. Calvin
will open the week at 19th-ranked Wheaton Tuesday night in a match slated to
start at 8:00 p.m. (ET). On Friday, Calvin will face 13th-ranked
Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the UW-Oshkosh Valley Cup Invitational at 4:30 p.m. (ET).
On Saturday, the Knights will meet regionally-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater at
1:30 p.m. (ET) in the Valley Cup Invitational. Wheaton, Wisconsin-Oshkosh and
Wisconsin-Whitewater all qualified for the NCAA III Tournament a year ago.
