CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2003
MEN'S SOCCER
GRAND RAPIDS * The Cal Bergsma Memorial Invitational saw more exciting action in today's match between Calvin College and Anderson University. Calvin took care of business in a 4-0 victory, led by the two-goal performance of junior Joel Vande Kopple (Grand Rapids Christian). The victory allowed the Knights to captured the championship of the two-day exchange tournament with Hope College as Hope battled Wilmington to a scoreless tie on Saturday, leaving Calvin as the only 2-0 team over the weekend.
Just 8:20 into the game, Vande Kopple scored his first goal off a centering cross from sophomore John VanWylen (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Vande Kopple kept his team moving in the 25th minute with his second goal on a header from the cross of senior David Buursma (Western Michigan Christian). Just four minutes later, freshman Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian) scored his second of the season on a Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) assist.
Calvin started the second half quickly, scoring just eight seconds in when sophomore Levi Kool (Holland Christian) stole the ball and went straight to the net. The rest of the game saw plenty of action with several Calvin scoring chances but neither team would score again.
Sophomore Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian) and freshman Aaron Valberg (Bellevue Christian) split the goaltending responsibilities right down the middle. Westra made one save and Valberg had two in the shut-out.
Calvin will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to nationally-ranked Wheaton for an 8:00 p.m. start (Grand Rapids time). The game will be broadcast by Wheaton student radio station WETN. A link to the broadcast will be made available from the Calvin web site.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
HOLLAND * Calvin's road woes continued as the Knights suffered a 4-0 defeat at rival Hope Saturday afternoon at the Buys Athletic Complex. Over the last two years, Calvin is just 3-9-2 in games played on the road.
Calvin outshot Hope 18-13 and the Knights also held the advantage in
corner kicks, 14-8. The Dutch were able to make good on their scoring
chances however while Calvin did not. The Flying Dutch were led by junior Dawn
Gillam who amassed two goals and two assists. The other two goals were
notched by sophomore Negeen Masghati.
Calvin drops to 0-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the MIAA while Hope
improves to 4-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the conference. The Knights
