CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2003
MEN'S SOCCER
A dramatic goal by junior midfielder Joel Veldhouse enabled Calvin to avoid
overtime as the Knights claimed a 2-1 victory over visiting Wilmington College
of Ohio Friday afternoon in the first round of the Cal Bergsma Memorial
Invitational. A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Veldhouse one-timed a
chip pass from junior Joel Vande Kopple (Grand Rapids Christian HS) into the
lower left-hand corner of the Wilmington net with just 1:48 left in regulation
to break a 1-1 tie. The blast by Veldhouse came from 20 yards out, sending a
large Calvin crowd into a frenzy. The goal was his third of the season and the
20th of his Calvin career.
Calvin dominated the match but found itself locked in a scoreless deadlock at
halftime. The Knights (2-0) then took a 1-0 lead six-and-a-half minutes into
the second half as Vande Kopple took a crossing pass from Veldhouse and crushed
a right-footed blast past Wilmington keeper Justin Saylor from point-blank
range.
Calvin threatened to score a clinching goal over the next 25 minutes but
Wilmington hung tough and with 6:47 left in regulation, the Quakers (2-3)
capitalized as Derek Van der Sluijs was able to chip a pass over the head of
Calvin goaltender Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Wilmington's Greg
Staten took the chip and headed the ball into a wide-open net, tying the game
at one.
With overtime lurking, Calvin upped the pressure and broke through when Vande
Kopple pounced on a ball at midfield and sent a perfect lead chip to Veldhouse
who made no mistake in rocketing the ball past Saylor.
Calvin finished the game with a 20-6 shots at goal advantage with Westra
collecting two saves for the Knights and Saylor nine saves for the Quakers.
In the other half of the tournament, Hope defeated Anderson 7-0. Calvin will
host Anderson at 2:00 p.m. Saturday while Hope will host Wilmington. The
tournament winner will be based on won-loss record with goal differential in
the tournament serving as the tiebreaker. Hope is the defending tournament
champion.
VOLLEYBALL
ALBION -- The Knights continued their undefeated record, moving to 7-0
overall and 3-0 in the MIAA, in convincing fashion with a three-game sweep of
the Albion Britons 30-19, 30-19, 30-24. Albion fell just under .500 overall to
5-6 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA. Calvin, still yet to lose a game in the MIAA
with all three victories being of the sweep variety, were led by the powerful
arm of sophomore Katie Schultz (Escondido, CA) and her 11 kills.
The Knights began the Knight slowly, surrendering the first two points to the
Britons, but quickly regained their step and moved to a 14-9 lead, aided in
part by two Schultz aces. The Knights were able to push their lead to 20-14,
helped along by four kills from Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA), who finished the
match with eight kills. Calvin then scored 10 of the next 14 points to finish
game one at 30-19.
Game two seemed to be the same story as the first, with the Knights slowly
building the lead and being able to hold it through to a 30-19 victory.
Schultz was again able to help the Knights get a lead early with three kills in
the first half of the game.
Calvin struggled to start the third game, falling to early deficits of 4-6 and
6-10. It was able to gain the lead at 17-16 and never looked back, finishing
it at 30-24.
Freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow Munroe Falls) led the Knights with 16 digs, while
passing the ball effectively to junior setter Jill Scholten (Holland Christian)
who accumulated 37 assists. Schultz and junior Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian)
each added 14 digs, while sophomore Chirstine Hendricks (Turpin) accumulated
four blocks, two of which were solo.
Calvin will be back in action this Wednesday when they play host to Kalamazoo
at 7:00 p.m. in the Calvin Fieldhouse.
