    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 10, 2003

    WOMEN'S COLLEGE GOLF

    CASCADE * Using near perfect playing conditions, the Calvin women's golf team took first place in a triangular featuring three Grand Rapids teams Wednesday afternoon at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club. Calvin finished the triangular with a team score of 378, six strokes ahead of cross-town rival Aquinas while Davenport had three golfers compete but did not post a team score.

    Calvin was led by sophomore Annie Huizenga (Unity Christian HS) who fired a sparkling round of 84 while sophomore Margaret Tassaro (Carnegie, PA) had a 96, junior Dawn Svenkeson (Scandia, MN) a 97, freshman Abby Stemler (Elk River, MN) a 101, sophomore Anne Prins (Unity Christian HS) a 110 and sophomore Linnea Vincent (Grand Rapids Christian HS) a 118.

    "We're excited about the victory," said Calvin women's golf coach Jerry Bergsma. "Our players have never been a part of a competition where they have taken first place in a Calvin uniform until today. We're looking forward to opening our league season next week."

    Calvin is scheduled to open its MIAA campaign next Tuesday at the Medalist Golf Club. The MIAA outing will be hosted by Albion and is slated to start at 2:00 p.m.

    WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

    The first women's NCAA III cross country poll has been released and the Calvin women's cross country team is again near the top of the rankings as the Knights are ranked fourth.

    Under the direction of head coach Nancy Meyer, Calvin placed fifth at the NCAA III Championships a year ago, finishing just nine points out of fourth place. Defending national champion Williams (MA) received all seven first place votes in this week's poll while Middlebury (VT) * the 2000 and 2001 national champion * is ranked second. Wartburg College (IA) is ranked third. Also named the Knights, Wartburg is led by defending individual national champion Missy Buttry who also claimed national titles in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters in impressive fashion at the 2003 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

    Calvin is scheduled to open its season on September 20 at the Parkside Invitational in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Calvin returns five of its top seven runners from a year ago along with several promising newcomers.

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER

    A pair of Calvin soccer games are set for RealAudio broadcasts this weekend. On Friday, the Calvin men's soccer game against Wilmington of Ohio will be aired at 4:00 p.m. with Calvin Sports Information assistant Josh Miller calling the play-by-play. The contest will be the opener of the two-day Cal Bergsma Memorial Invitational. Wilmington will head into Friday's game riding the wave of a 1-0 upset victory at 11th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan Tuesday night.

    On Saturday, Calvin Sports Information assistant Ross Weener will call the play-by-play of the women's soccer game at rival Hope. Saturday's game will begin at noon. Ranked eighth in the Great Lakes Region, Hope will carry a 3-0-1 overall record into Saturday's game while Calvin (0-2-1 overall) will be seeking its first victory.

    The Calvin men's soccer team is also currently ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA Great Lakes Regional poll. The Knights (1-0) picked up a 6-2 victory over Aquinas last week in their season opener.
