CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

NOTRE DAME, IN -- Playing in the shadow of the "Golden Dome" neither Calvin or
St. Mary's could find the elusive "golden goal" in the MIAA opener for both
teams. The result was a 2-2 double-overtime tie between the two MIAA foes
Tuesday afternoon at the St. Mary's soccer field.

The draw marked the second straight year the two teams had played to a tie at
St. Mary's. Calvin (0-2-1 overall) struck first on a goal by freshman Jill
Capel (Unity Christian HS) just eight minutes into the match. On the play,
Capel took a lead pass from freshman Sarah Weesies and fired a low hard shot
into the net to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

St. Mary's (3-0-1 overall) came back with a goal by Shannan Artnak 12 minutes
later with Artnak heading in a rebound shot by Jen Herdman that had originally
    struck the crossbar.

In the second half, Calvin struck first again as sophomore Kara Zuidema
(Escondido, CA) fired in a shot eight minutes in after receiving a pass from
sophomore Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian HS). Neither team would score again
however although both teams came close.

In the closing minutes of regulation, St. Mary's came up with a flurry of
corner kicks and nearly broke through with a go-ahead goal. In extra-time,
Weesies just missed scoring in the opening 10 minutes after breaking free for a
shot. Capel came close in the second overtime, cranking a left-footed blast
that was snared by St. Mary's keeper Laura Heline.

Calvin finished with a 10-6 shots at goal advantage but St. Mary's came up
with 10 corner kicks to Calvin's five.

Calvin swings back into action on Saturday when it travels to rival Hope for a
match slated to start at noon at the Buys Athletic Complex. The contest will
be the fourth consecutive road match for the Maroon and Gold.

    MEN'S GOLF

Calvin opened its MIAA campaign with fifth place finish at an MIAA outing

score of 305 with Hope second at 306, Albion third at 311 and Alma fourth at
    313. Adrian was sixth at 343 and Kalamazoo seventh at 346.

Tuesday's outing was the first of seven league outings. The Knights were

to finish ninth individually. Senior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian
HS) and freshman Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian HS) were next with rounds
of 79 that placed them tied for 17th place. Rounding out Calvin's finishers
