CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2003
**TRIO OF CALVIN FALL SPORTS ATHLETES NAMED MIAA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK**
Although the fall sports season is young, Calvin fall sports athletes are
already bringing in honors as three Calvin athletes have received MIAA Player
of the Week accolades for their efforts this past week.
In men's soccer, Calvin junior midfielder Joel Veldhouse has been named MIAA
Player of the Week for the third time in his career. A native of Sioux Falls,
South Dakota, Veldhouse scored a pair of goals and assisted on another in
leading the Knights to a season-opening 6-2 victory over cross-town rival
Aquinas College last Wednesday afternoon. Veldhouse now has 19 goals and nine
assists in his Calvin career. A year ago, the Sioux Falls Christian High
School graduate was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player in men's soccer.
The men's soccer team returns to action on Friday when it hosts Wilmington
College of Ohio in the opener of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Invitational. The
Knights will then face Anderson of Indiana on Saturday in the tournament's
second day of competition.
In volleyball, Calvin has two individuals who have received MIAA Player of the
Week honors. Junior Kara Kuipers of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School
leads the way as she has been named MIAA Player of the Week for the second
straight week. A 6-0 middle-hitter, Kuipers sparkled in a three-game (30-23,
30-23, 30-20) victory over rival Hope last Wednesday night as she amassed 20
kills and nine blocks while also compiling a sizzling .655 hitting percentage.
The Hudsonville native also served two aces and finished with two digs in the
win. On the year, Kuipers has an impressive hitting percentage of .503 and is
averaging 5.38 kills, 1.69 blocks and 1.06 digs-per-game.
In addition, sophomore setter Jill Scholten has been named MIAA Speciality
Player of the Week. This is the first year the MIAA has designated a specialty
player of the week award in volleyball. Scholten hails from Holland and is a
graduate of Holland Christian High School. Also a pitcher and outfielder on
the Calvin softball team, Scholten is receiving MIAA Player of the Week honors
for the first time in her athletic career.
In Wednesday's victory over Hope, Scholten tossed out 56 assists and picked
up two kills, a dig and a block. She is currently averaging 13.67 assists and
1.47 digs-per-game.
The Calvin volleyball team returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts St.
Mary's of Indiana at 7:00 p.m. in an MIAA conference match. The Knights are
currently 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA.
