    MEN'S GOLF

BATTLE CREEK * A strong second day showing allowed the Knights of Calvin to leap-frog five teams and finish ninth in a field of 16 teams at the Olivet College Comet Classic Saturday afternoon. The two-day invitational was held at the Bedford Valley Country Club and played to a par 71 on Saturday.

On Friday, Calvin posted a team score of 316, leaving the Knights in 14th place. On Saturday, Calvin dropped nine strokes in posting a team score of 307, giving the Knights a final tournament total of 623, one stroke ahead of Tri-State and three strokes behind seventh place Franklin (IN) and Siena Heights.

Seniors Phil Rietema (Grand Rapids Baptist HS) and Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian HS) led the Knights on Saturday as Rietema carded a round of 73 and Kelly a round of 76. Freshman Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and junior Mike Bratt (Lynden, WA) also had sub-80 rounds as TenBrink posted a score of 76 and Bratt a round of 77. TenBrink's score did not count toward Calvin's Saturday's team score as he was listed as an alternate for the tournament. Rounding out Calvin's finishers on Saturday were junior Ricky Shilts (Kalamazoo Central HS) with a round of 84 and senior Ryan Brandsma (Hinsdale, IL) with a round of 81.

Hope and Olivet tied for first place with two-day totals of 603. Hope was then declared the tournament champion by virtue of a tie-breaker.

"This was a good start to the season," said first-year head coach Jim Timmer Jr. "We started out a little slow yesterday but we really picked it up this afternoon. In particular, Phil Rietema and Matt Kelly were outstanding and provided great senior leadership. We are looking forward to opening the league season next week."

Calvin is scheduled to compete at the first MIAA outing of the year on Tuesday. The outing will be hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club.
