WOMEN'S SOCCER
GRANVILLE, OH * The two-time defending NCAA III champion Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan were up to the task against Calvin Friday night at the Denison University Big Red Invitational as the Knights were defeated 4-0.
Ranked number-one in the latest Division III national poll, Ohio Wesleyan (4-0) scored twice in each half to gain the shutout win.
Playing in its season opener, Calvin (0-1) threatened to score on a pair of breakaway scoring opportunities but Ohio Wesleyan goaltender Jamie Blake came out of the goalmouth to stop both chances.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Calvin 13-6 with freshman Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) picking up four shots for the Knights and freshman Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) the remaining two shots at goal. Freshman Lisa Campbell (Gull Lake HS) also made her debut in goal for the Knights and collected five saves.
"Even though the score might not indicate it, we really played a nice game," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker of his squad that features 11 first-year players. "We could have been intimidated against the defending national champs playing underneath the lights but we went right at them. Even though this game ended up as a loss, I think it will prove to be a confidence builder for our team."
Calvin returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it faces host Denison University at 1:00 p.m. Ranked 20th in the latest national poll, Denison defeated MIAA opponent Olivet 5-0 earlier on Friday.
