    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, MAY 13, 2003

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

    NAPERVILLE, IL -- A trio of Calvin athletes had strong first day performances
    at at a last chance meet hosted by North Central College on Tuesday and will
    look to build momentum on Wednesday.

    In the heptathlon, Calvin senior Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
    and freshman Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) ranked 1-2 after the first
    day of competition in the two-day event with VanderLaan leading a field of nine
    competitors with 2,856 points while Hendricks was second with 2,654 points.
    VanderLaan has already qualified automatically in the heptathlon for the
    upcoming NCAA III Championships while Hendricks has just a provisional
    qualifying mark and is looking to improve upon her earlier score.

    In the men's competition, Calvin senior Ben Talsma (Western Michigan Christian
    High School) had a strong first day in the decathlon as he was able to build a
    total of 3,413 points. Talsma is currently second in a field of nine
    competitors. Talsma has also posted an NCAA III provisional qualifying score
    in the event earlier this year but needs a better performance to advanced to
    next week's NCAA III Championships.
