    HEUKER AND GRIFFITH NAMED TO ALL-MIAA 2ND TEAM IN BASEBALL

    The 2003 All-MIAA baseball teams have been released and Calvin juniors Darrell
    Heuker and Aaron Griffith have been named to the All-MIAA second team.

    A catcher, Heuker is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity Christian High
    School. The right-handed hitter batted .283 in conference games this spring
    with 17 RBI's, 14 runs scored and four home runs to finish third in the MIAA in
    home runs and sixth in RBI's. He also compiled a slugging percentage of .533 to
    rank 10th in the MIAA in slugging percentage. Defensively, Heuker threw out
    nine runners attempting to steal a base and compiled a fielding percentage of
    .960.

    A rightfielder, Griffith batted .322 in MIAA games this spring, collecting 19
    hits in 50 trips to the plate to finish 18th in the MIAA batting race.
    Defensively, the Manhattan, Kansas native committed just one error in 29 total
    chances for a fielding percentage of .966.

    Calvin players receiving honorable mention recognition from the MIAA coaches
    were senior Arie Eppinga, sophomore Josh Vriesman and freshman Tyler VanEps.

    Eppinga is from Walnut Creek, California and is a graduate of Contra Costa
    Christian High School. A first baseman, Eppinga finished 14th in the MIAA
    batting race with a .333 average that included 14 RBI's and 12 runs scored.
    Defensively, he did not commit an error in 160 fielding chances.

    Vriesman and VanEps are both graduates of Denver Christian High School and
    natives of Denver, Colorado. A shortstop, Vriesman batted .299 in league games
    with 14 runs scored, six RBI's and one home run. Defensively, he compiled a
    fielding percentage of .908 and helped turn 13 double plays. A double play
    partner of Vriesman at second base, VanEps finished sixth in the MIAA batting
    race with a .362 average in league games. He also belted two home runs in
    conference play and finished with a slugging percentage of .534 to rank ninth
    in the MIAA in slugging percentage.

    Calvin finished the year with an 8-27 overall record and a 4-14 conference mark
    that was good for a sixth place league finish.

    CALVIN TAKES 2ND IN MIAA COMMISSIONER'S CUP STANDINGS (In conjunction with

    Calvin College has finished second in all three categories of the final MIAA
    All-Aports standings behind Hope College. Hope took first place in the
    (overall) Commissioner's Cup standings with 174 points, 27 points ahead of
    second place Calvin (147). In the men's all-sports standings, Hope (82)
    finished 21 points ahead of second place Calvin (61). In the women's
    all-sports standings, Hope finished six points ahead of Calvin with 92 to
    Calvin's 86. Calvin's overall point total was a drop of 19 points from its
    2001-2002 performance while its men's point total marked a 25-point drop over a
    year ago. Calvin's point total on the women's side equaled its point total
    from a year ago.
    It marks the third straight year that Hope College has finished in first place
    in all three categories.
    The MIAA presents separate awards for the best cumulative finish in men's and
    women's sports as well as an award for the best cumulative finish in all league
    sports (men and women). The separate awards are known as the Men's All-Sports
    Award and the Women's All-Sports Award while the cumulative award is known as
    the Commissioners' Cup.

    The final standings for the all-sports awards are determined on the basis of
    each college's standings in eight of nine sports for men and eight of nine
    sports for women. These point-totals are added together to determine the winner
    of the Commissioners' Cup.

    Alma 120, 5. Kalamazoo 103, 6. Adrian 66, 7. Olivet 61.

    Men's All-Sports Standings: 1. Hope 82, 2. Calvin 61, 3. Albion 56, 4. Alma 55,
    5. Kalamazoo 45, 6. Olivet 35, 7. Adrian 28.

    Women's All-Sports Standings: 1. Hope 92, 2. Calvin 86, 3. Albion 77, 4. Alma
    65, 5. Kalamazoo 58, 6. Saint Mary's 43, 7. Adrian 38, 8. Olivet 26.

    As a single sport member (football only), Wisconsin Lutheran is not computed
    into the all-sports standings.

    The Commissioner's Cup (MIAA All-Sports Award) has been presented since
    1934-35. Hope has now won the award 25 times, followed by Albion 14, Kalamazoo
    13, Calvin 8 and Alma 5.
