CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MONDAY MAY 5, 2003

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

The latest Division III men's and women's power rankings have been released for
track and field and both Calvin teams are highly ranked. Sponsored by the MF
Athletic Company, the power rankings have been released since 1999 and reflect
the strength of a track and field team in head-to-head dual meet competition.
The power rankings are tabulated by a cumulative point system. To submit a
team for ranking, a school must submit two individuals in each events that is
used in a head-to-head dual meet. In submitting an entry, the best time or
performance of the year for the individual is submitted. An individual may not
be listed in more than three individual events in the final weekly team entry.

In the latest Division III power rankings, the Calvin women's track and field
team is ranked second nationally with a cumulative score of 201.21, just over a
point under the first place score of 202.24 held by Williams (MA) College. In
the men's rankings, Calvin is ranked sixth with a cumulative team score of
196.89 with the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse the top team with a score of
225.28. Calvin is one of two MIAA teams in the top 20 in the men's power
rankings as Albion is ranked 11th with a cumulative team score of 189.87.

Both Calvin teams are the highest ranked teams from the Great Lakes Region in
the latest set of power rankings.

At the conclusion of the season, the team with the highest rankings in both the
men's and women's polls will receive trophies from the MF Athletic Company.

Williams (MA) was the recent winner for the women's indoor season while the
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point was the winner for the men's indoor
    season.

Calvin's highest finish in the women's rankings came a year ago when the
Knights posted a season-ending final score of 206.52, less than five points
behind first place Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Calvin's highest finish in the men's
rankings came in 2001 when it posted a final season score of 204.07.

    MORE WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

The hammer throw is not officially part of the MIAA track and field season
although it is an official event for NCAA III track and field. An exhibition
hammer throw competition was held this past Saturday at the MIAA Track and
Field Championships and in the women's competition, Calvin junior Carrie
Zatarga of Coopersville High School took first place with a throw of 140-6.
Zatarga's throw surpassed the winning throw of 139-10 that was set in an
exhibition hammer throw competition held at the 2002 MIAA Track and Field
Championships. Zatarga's throw was also less than two feet away from Calvin's
school record in the event and was a career-best by nearly two feet.

    SOFTBALL

The final MIAA softball standings are now in the books and Calvin has finished
in a three-way tie for second place with Albion and Olivet. Olivet's 2-1
victory over Albion in an elimination game of the MIAA Tournament last Saturday
allowed the Knights to finish in a three-way tie for second place.

The final season standings for MIAA softball are tallied through a combined
point system that is split between the MIAA regular season and the MIAA
    Tournament.

    FINAL MIAA SOFTBALL STANDINGS

    1. Alma
    2. Albion
    2. Calvin
    2. Olivet
    5. Hope
    6. St. Mary's
    7. Adrian
    8. Kalamazoo

    BASEBALL

Calvin's scheduled non-conference game at Grand Valley State on Tuesday has
been cancelled. The game was originally scheduled to be the regular season
finale for Grand Valley but with a set of conference victories over the
weekend, the Lakers captured first place in their conference and home field
advantage for the GLIAC Tournament this weekend. To give Grand Valley ample
time to prepare for the GLIAC Tournament, Tuesday's non-conference game with
    Calvin was cancelled.

Calvin will close out its season on Friday and Saturday with a three-game
series at Kalamazoo. The series will open on Friday with a single nine-inning
game scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. The series will conclude on Saturday with
a pair of seven-inning games that are set to begin at 1:00 p.m.

Calvin will be looking to break a school-record 15-game losing streak in the
    series with Kalamazoo.
