CALVIN SPORTS REPORT PART TWO FOR MAY 3, 2003
MIAA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS (DAY TWO) AT ALMA COLLEGE
ALMA - The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams continued their MIAA
championship streaks on Saturday as both teams took first place at the MIAA
Championships, hosted by Alma College.
In the women's competition, Calvin captured an unprecedented 14th straight
MIAA title with a commanding first place total of 302 points, 153 points ahead
of second place Hope. In the men's competition, Calvin held off Albion for
first place as the Knights produced a first place total of 233 points, 46
points ahead of the second place Britons. The league crown was the 10th
straight for the Calvin men - the second longest MIAA championship streak in
MIAA men's track and field history, surpassed only by Michigan State's streak
of 11 straight titles established between 1897-1907.
Sophomore Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) highlighted the afternoon for the Calvin
women as she shattered an MIAA and school record in winning the 200 meters with
an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 24.52. The time by Abbring is the
second fastest 200 time in NCAA III women's track and field this spring.
Abbring also captured the 100 meter title for the second straight year,
clocking in with a time of 12.47.
Abbring also ran legs on Calvin's first place 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relay
teams that recorded NCAA III provisional qualifying times. Calvin's 4 x 100
meter relay team clocked in with a time of 48.35 while its 4 x 400 meter relay
team took first in 3:52.66.
In the shot put, senior Mandy VanDenBosch (Grand Rapids Christian HS) repeated
as MIAA champion, winning with a throw of 42-3. In the 100 meter hurdles,
Calvin senior Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took first place in
the event for the fourth straight year, winning with a time of 15.06.
VanderLaan is the eighth athlete in MIAA women's track and field history to win
an event four straight years at the league meet and she is the first to do so
in the 100 meter hurdles.
Freshman Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a huge afternoon
as she captured MIAA titles in the 800 and 1,500 meter runs. In the 800,
Medema posted an NCAA III provisional qualifying and career-best time of
2:15.99. Her winning 1,500 meter time was 4:47.20.
Also repeating as an MIAA champion for Calvin on Saturday was sophomore Laura
Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) who won the 400 meter hurdles in 1:04.47. In the
3,000 meter steeplechase, Calvin junior Sarah Hastings (Traverse City Central
HS) established a new MIAA record in winning with a time of 11:13.20. Senior
teammate Tami VerMeulen took second place in the event (11:37). Hastings also
placed second in the 1,500 meters (4:48). Junior teammate Jessie Lair
(Southfield Christian HS) repeated as league champion in the 5,000 meters for
the third straight year, winning with a time of 17:58.69.
In the men's competition, Calvin was led by sophomore Nate Meckes (Westland
Lutheran HS) who took first place in the discus with an NCAA III automatic
qualifying throw of 172-2, just two inches short of the MIAA record. In the
high jump, Calvin senior Cameron Baron (Lake Stevens, WA) repeated as league
champion with a winning lap of 6-7 while Calvin senior Jon Hutchful (Accra,
Ghana) repeated as league champion in winning the triple jump with a mark of
45-10. Calvin senior Francis Ikwueme (Jos, Nigeria) took home an MIAA title in
the 100 meters, winning with a time of 11.10.
Other winners for the Calvin men included sophomore Andy Yazzie (Rehobath, NM)
in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:21.50), junior Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) in
the 1,500 meters (3:55.45) and sophomore Dave Haagsma (South Christian HS) in
the 5,000 meters (14:52.01).
