CALVIN SPORTS REPORT PART ONE FOR MAY 3, 2003
BASEBALL
Calvin (6-26 overall, 2-13 MIAA) dropped a double-header against the Adrian
Bulldogs 6-2 and 12-2, making their losing streak a Calvin record setting 15
straight. This slide surpasses the 1983 losing streak of 14 straight games.
Calvin took the lead to begin each game, scoring one in the first inning of
game one. Adrian scored one in the top of the third to tie the game at one.
Each team added another in the fourth to make it 2-2. The floodgates opened in
the fifth inning when Adrian scored three runs to go up 5-2. They added
another in the sixth to finish at 6-2.
The Knights only had three hits scattered throughout the stretch, one each
from Aaron Griffith (Manhattan), Arie Eppinga (Contra Costa Christian), and
Tyler VanEps (Denver Christian). The runs were scored by Terry O'Neal
(Reeths-Puffer) and Griffith, whose hit was a home-run to right field.
Freshman Chris Hinkley (Oak Hill) started and drew the loss to fall to 0-2.
Hinkley went four and one-third innings while giving up six hits and five runs,
four of which were earned. Sophomore Andy Bunting (Glen Lake) took the relief
position and lasted one inning, giving up two hits and one run. Junior Dean
Thompson (Ogemaw Heights) pitched the final one and two-thirds innings, giving
up no hits or runs.
Calvin started the second game with two runs in the bottom of the first, but
the game was quickly tied 2-2 in the Bulldogs' next at bat. There was no more
scoring until the top of the fifth inning when Adrian knocked home five runs.
They added three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to win 12-2.
Calvin acquired six hits with Eppinga the only Knight with multiple hits.
Eppinga and VanEps collected both of Calvin's RBIs with Eppinga boosting his
season RBI total to 30, three short of the Calvin single-season record. Also
collecting hits for the Knights were Griffith, Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park
Community), VanEps, and Kyle Neher (Midland Dow).
Freshman Jory Trim (Creston) pitched the first six innings and gave up 11 hits
to go along with 10 runs, only five of which were earned. Trim (1-5) was
relieved in the seventh inning by freshman Justin Roza (Hamilton District
Christian) who gave up three hits and two earned runs.
The Knights will be back in action next Tuesday when they travel to Grand
Valley State University for a 4:00 non-conference match-up. The game will be
broadcast via RealAudio at: www.Calvin.edu/sports
