Jeanne Cole and Rachelle Heyboer Receive First Team All-MIAA Softball Honors
GRAND RAPIDS * The All-MIAA softball teams have been selected and Calvin's Jeanne Cole and Rachelle Heyboer have landed spots on the All-MIAA first team. In addition, Heyboer has been named the MIAA's first Defensive Player of the Year.
A freshman, Cole split time between shortstop and pitcher this year. Cole is a native of Fountain and a graduate of Mason County Eastern High School. In 14 regular season conference games this year, Cole batted .348 with 10 runs scored and 10 RBI's. Of her 16 hits in conference play, seven were for extra bases including a pair of triples. On the mound, Cole went 2-3 in conference play with a 3.40 ERA. She also sparkled defensively, committing just three errors in over 50 fielding chances for a .943 fielding percentage.
Heyboer is from Fremont and is a graduate of Fremont High School. She is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA first team. A pitcher, Heyboer led the MIAA in earned run average this spring with a 0.71 ERA in eight conference appearances. In conference play, Heyboer fashioned a 6-1 record that included three shutout victories and one save. She was also named MIAA Pitcher of the Week once during the season.
Defensively, Heyboer was also superb as she did not commit an error in 15 fielding chances, allowing her to receive the MIAA's inaugural Defensive Player of the Year award.
Receiving coaches honorable mention recognition from the MIAA coaches were Calvin senior Becky Austen and junior Keri Cole. Austen is from Pembroke, Ontario. She is a graduate of Fellowes High School. Austen served as Calvin's second baseman this year and played shortstop when Jeanne Cole was on the mound. Austen batted .268 with nine RBI's and seven runs scored in conference games this year. She also compiled a .943 fielding percentage, committing just three errors in 51 fielding chances. Keri Cole is from Fountain and is a graduate of Mason County Eastern High School. She also batted .268 this year in conference play while splitting time between the outfield and second base. Cole played second base when her younger sister Jeanne was pitching. The elder Cole collected six RBI's in conference games and did not commit an error in 25 fielding chances.
Calvin finished the year with a 24-13 overall record and tied for second with Albion and Olivet in the final MIAA standings. Calvin took second in the MIAA regular season standings with a 10-4 record and then took fourth at the four-team MIAA Tournament last weekend. Calvin's overall record this year was its finest since the 1997 season when it finished 28-15 and gained a share of the final MIAA championship.
