CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY APRIL 26, 2003
SOFTBALL
The final game for three special Calvin seniors ended with a pair of victories
over Adrian 4-0 and 8-1. Seniors Becky Austen (Pembroke, Ontario), Emily Mejeur
(Kalamazoo Christian), and Sandy Van Leeuwen (Unity Christian) each played
their last game at Calvin field and completed a winning record in the MIAA for
the second consecutive year. The Calvin victories and the Albion sweep of Hope
assures Calvin a spot in the post-season MIAA tournament next weekend hosted by
regular season champion Alma.
In game one Calvin struck first and did not look back, riding the strong right
arm of sophomore ace Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) to a 4-0 victory.
Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern) started things with a leadoff triple and
was plated by Austen who drove a shot into center field for an RBI single.
Austen advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a Keri Cole (Mason
County Eastern) RBI single.
Heyboer was flawless, pitching seven innings and only giving up four hits. She
struck out three and talked none, improving her record to 10-3 on the season.
It was her third shutout of the season and the eighth of her career.
The Knights tacked on two insurance runs, one in the fourth and one in the
sixth inning, pinning the loss on right-hander Michelle Marshall (4-10).
Juniors Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian) and K. Cole each notched two hits as
the Knight bats tallied eight overall.
In game two Calvin received another stellar pitching performance and scored
five runs in the fourth inning to ice an 8-1 victory. Knight right-hander Kara
Van Kooten (Grace Christian, Anchorage, AL) cruised to her fifth victory of the
year, pitching seven strong innings as she struck out nine and walked none.
Van Kooten got help from the Calvin bats in the fourth inning. Sophomore pinch
hitter Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian) led off the inning with a triple
to right field. Junior Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian) then belted a
double that scored Sarah Piersma (Grand Rapids Christian), who was
pinch-running for Konyndyk. Sophomore Angie Sietsma (Grandville) scored
Dyksterhouse on a base hit and Mejuer reached base on a fielders choice. J.
Cole belted another extra base hit, a double, and cleared the bases, scoring
two runners. Austen single again and scored J. Cole from second as the Knights
struck for five runs on five hits, taking advantage of three Bulldogs errors.
Calvin (20-11 overall) currently stands in second place in the MIAA with an
8-4 mark in league play, holding a slim lead over Albion, who is 9-5 in the
MIAA. Alma leads the league with a 10-2 mark as they have completed league play
and will host the double elimination MIAA Tournament next weekend on May 2 & 3.

Calvin (6-21, 2-10 MIAA) dropped a doubleheader against the Alma Scots (8-14,
5-5 MIAA) to continue their losing streak to eleven games. The Knights have
also dropped ten straight in MIAA action.
Today started looking much like game one of the three game series with Alma
scoring four runs in the first inning. Calvin scored two in the bottom half of
the inning to cut the lead to 4-2. The Scots were the next on the board when
they drove in two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Calvin reacted by scoring
two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and two in the bottom of the seventh
to send the game to extra innings. The two runs in the bottom of the seventh
came off the bat of freshman Tyler VanEps (Denver Christian), his second of the
season. The game saw no scoring until the top of the ninth inning when Alma
brought three unearned runs across the plate. The Knights were unable to
answer and again fell, 10-7.
Freshman Jory Trim (Creston) started the game and went six innings for the
Knights. Trim gave up eight hits and seven runs while walking two and striking
out two. Kory Ciesielski (Petosky) relieved Trim and pitched two and
two-thirds innings. Ciesielski (0-4) took the loss in giving up one hit and
two runs. Andy Bunting pitched the final third, giving up one run on one hit.
Van Eps led the Knights on offense with his 4-4 effort, earning five runs
batted in and scoring a run of his own. Sophomore Josh Vriesman (Denver
Christian) also had a multiple hit game at 2-5 and Senior Arie Eppinga (Contra
Costa Christian) hit 2-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored.
Game two started close with neither team scoring a run through the first two
innings, but the streak was broken in the third inning with Alma's three runs.
Calvin had two runs of in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2. The
fourth inning was when the Scots put it away, with their four runs and Calvin
using three pitchers. Starting pitcher Brandon Oldenbroek (Unity Christian)
was still in the game to start the fourth, but on a two-out rally Alma loaded
the bases and it was time for freshman Chris Hinkley (Oak Hill) to do his work.
His work only lasted one batter when he walked Steve Slowke to bring in the
first run of the inning. Then was junior Dean Thompson (Ogemaw Heights) to
finish out the inning. Thompson threw a wild pitch to the first batter that
brought in a run and advanced the others. He then gave up a two-rbi single up
the middle, which gave the Scots a 7-2 lead. Alma added one in the sixth and
Calvin one in the seventh to make the final score 8-3.
Oldenbroek (0-3) was charged the loss while giving up six hits and six runs,
five of which were earned. Hinkley only face the single batter and was charged
for one earned run, while Thompson pitched one-third and gave up one hit.
Vriesman took to the mound for the final three innings and gave up five hits
and one run.
Junior Tim Voss (Chicago Christian) was the only multiple hit getter in his
2-3 and scoring a run. Eppinga had two runs batted in on 1-3 batting.
The Knights will be back in action this Wednesday during Calvin's academic
reading recess for a double-header at St. Xavier set to start at 1:00.
