    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

    HILLSDALE -- The sophomore track and field campaign for Calvin's Sue Abbring
    continues to heat up. A native of Highland, Indiana, and a graduate of Illiana
    Christian High School, Abbring sizzled on the track at the Hillsdale Gina
    Relays Saturday afternoon as she matched her own school record in the 100
    meters and then shattered the school record in the 200 meters.

    In the 100 meters, Abbring blazed across the line with a second place and NCAA
    III provisional qualifying time of 12.23, matching her own school record in the
    process. In the 200 meters, Abbring turned it up another notch as she took
    first with an NCAA III provisional qualifying and school record time of 24.66.
    Abbring's time shattered the previous school record of 24.72 set by Calvin
    All-American Megan Pierce in 2000. The time was also just short of an NCAA III
    autamatic qualifying performance and is the third fastest 200 meter time
    recorded in NCAA III women's track and field this spring. Abbring later ran a
    leg on Calvin's 4 x 400 meter relay team that took third with an NCAA III
    provisional qualifying time of 3:56.71.

    Calvin senior Annie VanderLaan of Grand Rapids Christian High School also had a
    record breaking weekend as she took second in the two-day seven-event
    heptathlon with a school record and NCAA III autamatic qualifying score of
    4,812 points. VanderLaan's total shattered her own school record of 4,674
    points and is the second highest point total in the event this spring in NCAA
    III women's track and field.

    Also producing an NCAA III provisional qualifying performance in the hepthatlon
    was Calvin freshman Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) who posted a total of
    4,134 points to take sixth place.

    In the women's 5,000 meters, Calvin junior Sarah Hastings (Traverse City
    Central HS) took fourth with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of
    17:13.90. Her time was a personal best by more than 20 seconds. Senior Jodi
    VerMeulen (Holland Christian HS) also took 13th with an NCAA III provisional
    qualifying time of 17:46.59.

    In the women's 10,000 meters, junior Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian HS) took
    second with a time of 37:02.11 while senior Rachel Baber (Brandon, WI) took
    eighth with a strong time of 38:20.69.

    Other highlights for the Calvin women included:

    *Junior Katie Corner (Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) taking third in the
    discus with an NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 148-7.

    *Freshman Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning the pole vault with a
    mark of 11-4 1/4.

    *Freshman Kim Vanderzee (Shoreline, WA) just missing an NCAA III provisional
    mark in the high jump with a career-best mark of 5-4 1/4 that was good for 7th
    place. Vanderzee also took eighth in the triple jump with a season-best mark
    of 34-7.

    *Senior Tami VerMeulen (Holland Christian HS) taking fourth in the 3,000 meter
    steeplechase with a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 11:17.26.

    *Freshman Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking seventh in the 800
    meters with a time of 2:17.14.

    *Sophomore Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) taking seventh in the 400 meter
    hurdles with a time of 1:04.44.

    In the men's competition, Calvin came up with a pair of NCAA III automatic
    qualifying efforts over the weekend along with a number of NCAA III provisional
    qualifying marks.

    Junior Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) helped lead the charge as he took second in the
    5,000 meters with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 14:27.72 while also
    recording an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 3:54.08 in taking fifth in
    the 1,500 meters.

    Kok was part of a talented group of distance runners for the Knights at the
    meet as several other individuals came up with big performances. In the men's
    10,000 meters, junior David Haagsma (South Christian HS) missed an NCAA III
    automatic qualifying time by two seconds as he took 23rd with a provisional
    qualifying and career-best time of 30:39.02. Junior Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc
    HS) took 31st in the 10K with an NCAA III provisional qualifying and
    career-best time of 31:12.39.

    In the 5,000 meters, Calvin also received NCAA III provisional qualifying times
    from senior Joel Klooster (Chatham, ON) and junior Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) as
    Klooster took third in 14:38.83 while Avery was 12th with a career-best time of
    14:50.60.

    In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Andy Yazzie (Rehobath, NM) took
    eighth with a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying and career-best time of
    9:14.58. Also turning in season-best times in the steeplechase were junior
    Joel Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) in 13th place (9:31.12) and senior Tim VanHaitsma
    (Unity Christian HS) in 20th (9:38.93).

    In the throws, Calvin sophomore Nate Meckes (Westland Lutheran HS) had a huge
    weekend as he took second in the shot put with an NCAA III automatic qualifying
    and career-best mark of 55-5 3/4 while also taking fourth in the discus with an
    NCAA III provisional qualifying and career-best throw of 164-0. Senior Nick
    VanderPlas (McBain Christian HS) was also superb for the Maroon and Gold,
    taking fifth in the shot put with a career-best and NCAA III provisional
    qualifying throw of 51-3 3/4. In addition, freshman Justin Grasmeyer (Norwalk,
    CA) took eighth in the discus with a career-best and NCAA III provisional
    qualifying throw of 156-0.

    Senior Ben Talsma (Western Michigan Christian HS) also had a big weekend,
    recording an NCAA III provisional qualifying score of 6,070 points. Talsma is
    the first Calvin athlete to record an NCAA III provisional or automatic
    qualifying score in the grueling 10-event, two-day competition since former
    MIAA MVP John David Stien accomplished the feat in 1997.

    Other highlights for the Calvin men included:

    *Senior Francis Ikwueme (Jos, Nigeria) taking 16th in the long jump with a
    season-best mark of 21-8 3/4 and placing ninth in the 100 meters (11.07).

    *Senior Jon Hutchful (Accra, Ghana) taking fifth in the triple jump with a
    season-best mark of 46-1 1/2

    *Freshman Brian VanDyken (Grand Rapids Christian HS) turning in season-best
    times of 49.17 in the 400 meters and 22.98 in the 200 meters.
