    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 25, 2003 (PART ONE)

    BASEBALL

    Calvin's losing streak was extended to nine games with an 8-2 loss to visiting Alma Friday afternoon in the opener of a three-game weekend series at Calvin Field.

    Senior Nick Duflo (1-3) scattered seven hits in gaining the complete-game win for the Scots (6-14 overall, 3-5 MIAA). Duflo kept the Knights (6-20 overall, 2-8 MIAA) off balance using a hard slider and his fastball as he struck out 10 batters while walking three.

    Alma capitalized on four Calvin errors in the top of the first inning to build a 3-0 lead. The Scots added two runs in the second and single runs in the third, fifth and ninth innings. Calvin scored a run in the second on an RBI single by freshman Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO). Calvin added a run in the bottom of the ninth on a lead-off home run by junior Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian HS) * his team-leading fourth of the year.

    Heuker went 3-for-4 on the afternoon along with a double. Freshman Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) also doubled for the Knights.

    Freshman Ben Buikema (Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS) took the loss for the Knights to fall to 1-5 on the year.

    The two teams return to action on Saturday with a pair of seven inning games, scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.

    MEN'S TENNIS

    Calvin sits in third place at the MIAA Championships with 11 points. The conference tournament is being hosted by Albion College. Hope and Kalamazoo are positioned to battle it out for first place on Saturday as the two teams will face off in the championship finals in all six singles flights on Saturday and in one of three doubles flights. Both teams are tied for first place after one day of competition with 16 points apiece.

    Calvin's number-three doubles team of senior Nate Kraai and freshman David Bratt of Grand Rapids Christian High School advanced to Saturday's championship final however and will meet the Hope team of Andy Phillips and Jason Wagenmaker Saturday at 10:00 a.m.

    In singles, Calvin advanced six individuals into the consolation final on Saturday. Scheduled to play in consolation finals Saturday are sophomore Kevin VanHaitsma (Unity Christian HS) at No. 1 singles; freshman Rafael Siebenschein (Lynden, WA) at No. 2 singles; senior Tom Zeilstra (Oak Brook, IL) at No. 3 singles; sophomore Jon Miedema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 4 singles; senior Nate Kraai (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 5 singles and freshman David Bratt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 6 singles.

    Kalamazoo is seeking to capture at least a share of its 65th consecutive MIAA title which ranks as the longest conference championship streak in NCAA history. Kalamazoo was defeated by Hope in an MIAA dual match earlier this year * its first MIAA dual match loss since 1962. Consequently, Kalamazoo must take first at the league meet to extend its conference championship streak.
