CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR THURSDAY APRIL 24, 2003

    SOFTBALL

SOUTH BEND, IN - On its second trip to St. Mary's College in two days the
Knights came up with a memorable performance, sweeping the Belles 11-2 and 5-3.
On Wednesday afternoon Calvin and St. Mary's were not able to play because
there were no umpires available at game time. The sweep catapults the Knights
into sole possession of second place in the MIAA with a 6-4 record. With four
games remaining the Knights have a slim margin over Hope and Albion who each
stand at 7-5 in the league. The top four teams advance to the league tournament
    on May 2 & 3.

In game one the Calvin bats showed new life, banging out eleven runs on twelve
hits. The Knights put up an eight spot in the top of the fifth inning and held
on in the bottom half to mercy the Belles. Calvin right-hander Rachelle Heyboer
(Fremont) picked up the win improving her record to 9-3 on the season. Heyboer
is 4-1 in MIAA play this year with her only blemish a 2-0 decision to league
leading Alma. The talented sister combination of Jeanne and Keri Cole (Mason
County Eastern) led the way for the Knights. Keri was 3-4 from the plate with
two RBIs and a run scored while Jeanne was 2-4 at the dish with a pair of RBIs
and a run scored as well. Becky Austen (Pembroke, Ontario), Heyboer, and Rachel
Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian) each tallied two hits.

Game two proved to be a much closer affair as the Knights struck for three
runs in the bottom of the first inning, added a pair of late insurance runs and
held on for a 5-3 victory. Sophomore Kara Van Kooten (Grace Christian,
Anchorage, AK) earned the win and was relieved by Heyboer, who picked up her
second save of the year. Dyksterhouse continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-2
from the plate and picking a pair of RBIs to lead the Knights in hitting.
Designated player Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian) was 2-3 from the plate
with an RBI. Sophomore Angie Sietsma (Grandville), Austen, and K. Cole each
    notched a base hit.

Calvin will conclude its league season with a double header with Adrian at
home on Saturday at 1:00 PM and a twin bill with Kalamazoo on the road on
Monday. The Kalamazoo game will be broadcast via the Internet broadcast,
starting at 3:25 PM. Go to www.calvin.edu/sports for more information and the
