SOFTBALL
OLIVET, MI - Another split by the Calvin softball team forced the Knights record to 4-4 in the MIAA, 15-10 overall. The Knights won the first game 4-0, but dropped the second game 10-1. Calvin has not swept or been swept in any of the double-headers it has played in this year.
In game one Calvin rode the strong right arm of sophomore ace Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont), as she pitched a four hit shutout, the seventh of her career. She struck out five and walked none, picking up her eighth win of the season.
Offensively, the Knights scored once in both the first and second inning before adding two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Calvin was paced by freshman Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern) and sophomore Lea Bareman (Unity Christian) who each collected two hits, going 2-3 from the plate with Bareman collecting two runs scored.
Game two went to the Comets, as the Knights pitching staff was taxed for thirteen hits and ten runs. J. Cole, the Knight's starting pitcher, lasted two-thirds of an inning giving up five runs on five hits. Cole was relieved by sophomore Kara VanKooten (Grace Christian-Anchorage, AK) who pitched five innings and gave up five runs while facing 27 batters. Freshman Jill Scholten (Holland Christian) came on in the bottom of the sixth inning and recorded the last out, facing two batters.
Offensively, the Knights were not able to muster many scoring opportunities against the tough right-hander Erica Anderson. Calvin did score in the third inning off of a single by junior outfielder Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern).
The Knights will begin a busy week on Monday with a double-header with Kalamazoo College, on the road at 3:30 pm (listen to the RealAudio broadcast at: www.Calvin.edu/sports beginning at 3:25 p.m., Jeff Febus and Ross Weener on the call). BASEBALL
Grand Rapids - The Olivet Comets (13-12, 5-4 MIAA) came into town and left with a three-game sweep over the Calvin Knights (6-17, 2-6 MIAA). On Friday, Olivet handed Calvin an 8-5 loss and on Saturday, Olivet took two from the Maroon and Gold, winning 11-9 and 15-14.
On Saturday, game one began with no scoring through the first two innings, but the Comets opened it up in the top of the third. Olivet scored one run in the third, but the Knights answered in the bottom of the inning with three of their own to go up 3-1. The Olivet bats then exploded and the Knights imploded when Olivet rang up eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 9-3 lead. Olivet added another in the fifth to go up 10-3, but the Knights matched that one in the bottom of the inning to make it 10-4. Olivet added their eleventh run in the sixth, while Calvin batted for two runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 11-6. The Knights held the Comets scoreless in the seventh and in the bottom of the inning made a valiant comeback effort in the form of a three-run homer by Tim Voss (Chicago Christian), making the lead only 11-9, but that is where it would finish.
Freshman Jory Trim (Creston) got the start and the decision for the Knights in falling to 1-4 on the season. He gave up nine earned runs in three and two-thirds innings and was relieved by junior Dean Thompson (Ogemaw Heights), who pitched two and one-third innings. Thompson gave up two earned runs and was relieved by freshman Justin Roza (Hamilton District Christian) who pitched one inning and struck out two, giving up no runs.
Olivet was led by starting pitcher Jacob Marlow who pitched six innings and gave up six runs. Marlow was relieved by Ryan Merchant who pitched one inning in relief and gave up three earned runs off the Tim Voss home run.
Juniors Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) and Bryce Weston (Petosky), along with sophomore Josh Vriesman (Denver Christian) and freshman Tyler VanEps (Denver Christian) each had two hits in game one of the double-header.
Calvin scored their nine runs on 11 hits and committed no errors. The Comets scored 11 runs on 12 hits and committed one error.
In game two, Olivet hopped out quickly on Calvin pitcher Josh Vriesman, who was making his first collegiate pitching appearance. The Comets scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but were soon put behind after the Knights knocked in four of their own. Olivet cut the lead to one in the third inning at 4-3, but Calvin didn't like it and opened up an 8-3 lead on four third-inning runs. Olivet stuck close though, as they batted in four runners in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to one again. Calvin put on their scoring caps again in the fifth inning when they knocked in five and opened up a 13-7 lead. The Knights added an insurance run in the sixth to go up 14-7, but it wasn't enough. Again, the Comet bats erupted as Olivet scored eight runs in the seventh. Of those eight runs, seven were scored before the Knights were able to record an out.
Vriesman went three innings, giving up three runs, two of which were earned. Freshman Chris Hinkley (Oak Hill) then relieved Vriesman for one-third of an inning and gave up three earned runs. Sophomore Andy Bunting (Glen Lake) came in to relieve the freshman and did so for two and two-thirds innings and gave up seven runs, six earned. Ryan Smith (Westminster Christian Academy) came in for the rest of the seventh inning and pitched for all three outs, giving up two runs, one earned, and taking the loss, his first decision of the season.
Calvin's bats were aided by VanEps who hit 4-5 in game two, scoring two runs and driving in one. Junior Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) also helped in the line-up with his three hits, three runs, and three runs batted in.
The Knights finished the game with 14 runs on 18 hits and had 4 errors. Olivet scored 15 runs on12 hits and committed 2 errors.
Calvin will take back to the field this Tuesday at Aquinas at Kimball Stadium, with the game set to start at 4:00 p.m.
