CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, APRIL 22, 2003
SOFTBALL
Tuesday afternoon turned up another split verdict for the Calvin softball team
as it took the opener of a doubleheader with Cornerstone 3-1 and then dropped
the nightcap 7-0. Calvin is now 16-11 on the season.
Sophomores Kara VanKooten (Anchorage, AK) and Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS)
teamed up for the victory in the opener as VanKooten went the first four
innings to pick up the win while Heyboer threw three innings of spotless relief
to pick up her first save of the season. VanKooten struck out four and walked
none in improving to 3-2 on the year while Heyboer allowed just two hits.
Calvin (16-11 picked up its first run on an RBI single from junior Keri Cole
(Mason County Eastern HS) in the first. Freshman Jill Scholten (Holland
Christian HS) followed with an RBI single in the second to give the Knights a
2-0 advantage. In the fourth, Calvin added a third run as sophomore Sarah
Piersma (Grand Rapids Christian HS) singled and eventually scored on a wild
pitch.
Cornerstone (20-12) pikced up a run in the fifth but Heyboer was able to
extenguish the Golden Eagle rally with three straight groundouts.
Calvin outhit Cornerstone 9-6 with Keri Cole and Piersma collecting two hits
apiece.
In game two, Cornerstone jumped out to a five-run lead with a run in the first
and four unearned runs in the second. Freshman Jeanne Cole (Mason County
Eastern HS) then came on in relief of starter Jill Scholten and threw the 5.1
innings of relief. Cornerstone added two runs in the seventh to put the game
out of reach.
Calvin picked up six hits in the loss with Jeanne Cole going 2-for-3 including
a double.
Scholten took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the year.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it journeys to St. Mary's for a 3:30
p.m. conference doubleheader.
BASEBALL
Calvin dropped its eighth straight game with a 9-2 defeat to visiting Aquinas
Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field.
Calvin (6-19) came up with 10 hits on the afternoon but the visiting Saints
(28-9) turned three double plays while the Knights also stranded seven runners.
Senior Arie Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) led the Calvin offensive attack by going
3-for-4 at the plate while junior Bryce Weston (Petoskey HS) went 2-for-3.
Freshman Tyler VanEps also continued his torrid pace at the plate as he belted
a solo home run in the second. VanEps has a team-leading .367 batting average.
Seven Calvin pitchers saw time on the mound with junior Dean Thompson (Ogemaw
Heights HS) taking the loss to fall to 1-4 on the year.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it opens up a three-game conference
series against Alma at 4:00 p.m. A RealAudio broadcast of the game will be

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin upped its dual match record to 8-5 overall and its MIAA mark to 4-2 with
a 9-0 win over visiting Alma Tuesday afternoon. Calvin will close out its MIAA
dual match campaign tomorrow afternoon when it journeys to defending MIAA
champion St. Mary's a for a match scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
