    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 2003

    BASEBALL

    Calvin's losing skid was extended to five games as the Knights dropped the opener of three-game conference series with Olivet Friday afternoon at Calvin Field.

    Calvin (6-16 overall, 2-5 MIAA) took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second. A sacrifice fly by senior Arie Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) brought in Calvin's first run while freshman Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) brought home sophomore Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) with an RBI double in the second after Vriesman had led off the inning with a two-base hit.

    Olivet came back with four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead only to see the Knights score lone runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game.

    In the seventh, Olivet rallied for two runs to take a 6-4 lead. Calvin came back with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out RBI single by junior Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian HS).

    The Comets (11-12 overall, 3-4 MIAA) added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth however to secure the win.

    Calvin used six pitchers in the game with freshman Kory Ciecielski (Petoskey HS) starting the game. Freshman Ben Buikema (Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS) took the loss to fall to 1-4 on the year.

    Calvin was outhit 11-7 with Heuker and Vriesman collecting two hits apiece.

    The two teams face each other in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.

    WOMEN'S TENNIS

    Calvin improved to 6-5 overall and to 2-2 in the MIAA with a 9-0 win over visiting Adrian Friday morning. Calvin will now prepare for a busy week as it journeys to Olivet Monday, hosts Alma Tuesday and then closes out its MIAA dual match schedule at St. Mary's Wednesday.

    The MIAA Championships will then be held next Friday and Saturday at Kalamazoo College.
