CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (Part Two) FOR APRIL 16, 2003
BASEBALL
A pair of solid pitching performances were not enough to keep Calvin from being
swept by rival Hope Wednesday afternoon at the Buys Athletic Complex as the
Flying Dutchmen handed Calvin 9-1 and 4-3 defeats to close out a three-game
series sweep of the Knights.
With the sweep, Hope (11-10 overall) took command of the MIAA race as the
Flying Dutchmen are now 8-1 in the conference while the Knights are 2-4 in the
MIAA and 6-15 overall.
In the opener, freshman Brandon Oldenbroek (Unity Christian HS) allowed just
one earned run in four and two-thirds inning of work but the Flying Dutchmen
were able to break open a 1-1 tie with five unearned runs in the bottom of the
fifth.
Calvin scored its lone run in the fourth on an fielder's choice by junior Aaron
Griffith (Manhattan, KS) that drove in senior Arie Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA).
Calvin finished with just four hits in the loss with Eppinga collecting a pair
of singles. Oldenbroek took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year.
In game two, freshman Ben Buikema (Lakwood-Lake Odessa HS) threw no-hit ball
for three innings before allowing three hits and three runs in the bottom of
the fourth that gave Hope a 3-1 lead. Calvin had scored the first run of the
game in the top of the first on an RBI single by junior Darrell Heuker (Unity
Christian HS) that scored sophomore Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO).
Calvin came back with a run in the fifth on an RBI single from freshman Kyle
Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) that scored Griffith from third base. Hope added
an insurance run in the top of the sixth which would prove pivotal as the
Knights scored once in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Vriesman.
With a runner on third and just one out, Calvin had a golden opportunity to tie
the game but a called strike three and a flyout to right field closed out the
Knight threat.
Buikema (1-3) took the loss despite giving up just five hits in six innings of
work. Calvin outhit Hope 8-5 in the loss with Vriesman collecting a pair of
singles.
Calvin will now prepare to open up another three-game conference series this
weekend as it hosts Olivet Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Calvin Field. The two teams
will then face each other in a Saturday doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
