CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 14, 2003
SOFTBALL
A sparkling one-hit, complete-game shutout effort by freshman Jill Scholten
allowed Calvin to gain a doubleheader split with visiting Ferris State
University Monday afternoon at the recently opened Calvin Softball Complex.
A graduate of Holland Christian High School, Scholten tallied the second
complete-game shutout victory of her collegiate career as Calvin recorded a 4-0
win with the hard-throwing right hander on the mound. Scholten walked four,
struck out three and allowed just one hit in improving to 2-0 on the year. She
received all the run support she would need in the bottom of the second as the
Knights (14-9) scored two runs as freshman Erinn Voss (Tinley Park, IL) ripped
a clutch two-out RBI single and freshman Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS)
followed moments later with a bases-loaded walk.
Cole later scored an insurance run as she led off the fifth inning with a
double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a fielder's
choice to third hit by junior Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN). Calvin's final
run came in the sixth as junior Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) drove in
junior Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian HS) from third base with a
sacrifice fly to left.
With her shutout victory, Scholten lowered her season earned run average to
2.75. She also picked up one of Calvin's six hits in a 4-1 opening game
loss.
Fielding errors doomed the Knights in the opener as the visiting Bulldogs
(11-19-1) scored three unearned runs off six Calvin errors.
Calvin's only run came in the sixth as senior Emily Mejeur (Kalamazoo
Christian HS) singled in sophomore Lea Bareman (Unity Christian HS) from second
base with a two-out single.
Calvin placed runners on base in every inning but one but also stranded 11
runners in the contest.
Sophomore Kara VanKooten (Anchorage, AK) suffered the hard-luck defeat to fall
to 2-2 on the year. VanKooten managed to lower her ERA to a team-leading 2.15
despite the loss.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to St. Mary's for a
conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
