CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR April 12, 2003
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD ADDITION
Calvin senior Nick VanderPlas of McBain Christian HS threw a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 50-5 ½ in taking second place in the shot put Saturday. It had been reported that VanderPlas threw 50-3 ½.
In addition, sophomore Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) established a personal-best as an exhibition competitor in the women's shot put as she uncorked a throw of 41-0.
SOFTBALL
Calvin first-ever competition at its new softball field ended in a doubleheader split as the Knights took the opener 3-1 and then fell in the nightcap 1-0.
Pitching dominated the afternoon as both teams struggled to scratch across runs. In the opener, Calvin's scoring all took place in the third inning as the Knights (13-8 overall, 3-3 MIAA) used three hits and three Albion errors to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Emily Mejeur (Kalamazoo Christian HS) led off the inning with a single and later scored on an RBI double by senior Becky Austen (Pembroke, ON). Austen then scored on a throwing error and one batter later, junior Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) scored on another error.
Albion (10-15 overall, 3-3 MIAA) scored its lone run in the fifth but could not score again. In the sixth, Calvin choked off a potential Albion run as Austen threw out a runner at home with one out.
In the seventh, Albion was retired in order by Calvin sophomore pitcher Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS) who improved to 7-3 on the year with the complete-game pitching performance. Heyboer scattered seven hits in the game while striking out three and walking one.
In game two, Albion scored the only run in the bottom of the fourth as Megan Russell reached base on a one-out triple and sophomore Sarah Caskey followed with an RBI single.
Calvin had the potential game-tying run on second base in the fifth and sixth inning but could not come up with the key hit. Calvin finished the game with just four hits while Albion had just three. Freshman Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) took the hard-luck loss for Calvin to fall to 3-4 on the year. Michaela Adams pitched both games for Albion and is now 6-7 on the year.

Ranked 19th in the latest NAIA national poll, Spring Arbor (20-8) held a 4-1 lead through four innings but the Knights rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. Spring Arbor came back with a run in the sixth and loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh. Calvin got out of the jam however as freshman Chris Hinkley (Monmouth, ME) coaxed the first batter he faced into a pop-out and the following batter into a game-ending double-play.
Freshman Ben Buikema (Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS) collected the victory for Calvin in relief to up his record to 1-2 on the year while Hinkley picked up his first collegiate save.
Calvin collected 10 hits in the victory with freshman Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO), sophomore Kyle Neher (Midland HS) and junior Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) picking up two hits apiece.
