CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 15, 2003
BASEBALL
A power-hitting Hope College team flexed its muscle Tuesday afternoon at the
Buys Athletic Complex as the host Flying Dutchmen belted five home-runs, en
route to a 17-6 seven-inning mercy-rule win over Calvin.
Calvin (6-13 overall, 2-2 MIAA) scored a run in the top of the first inning on
a two-out RBI single by senior Arie Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) but the Flying
Dutchmen came back with five runs in the bottom of the first to take control.
Hope sophomore Kyle Trapp set the tone for the game by smacking a solo home run
to left on the first pitch of the Hope half of the first.
With a brisk wind blowing straight out to centerfield, the home runs continued
to fly out at a rapid pace as Hope belted five home runs in the first three
innings - two from senior rightfielder Mike Van Beek, to take a 14-1 lead.
Trailing 17-2, Calvin came back with a grand-slam homer by sophomore Kyle Neher
(Midland) in the top of the seventh, scoring freshman Kyle Hollemans (East
Kentwood HS), junior Terry O'Neal (Muskegon-Reeths Puffer HS) and sophomore
Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) who had all singled to lead off the inning.
Calvin finished the afternoon with 10 hits while Hope collected 19 hits
including nine of the extra-base variety.
O'Neal, Neher and junior Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) led the Knights with
two hits apiece. Freshman Jory Trim (Grand Rapids Creston HS) took the loss to
fall to 1-3 on the year with freshmen Chris Hinkley (Monmouth ME), Kory
Ciesielski (Petoskey HS) and Ryan Smith (Madison, AL) also seeing time on the
hill.
Hope starter Jon Deming picked up the victory to improve to 3-0 on the year.
The two teams are scheduled to play tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in a doubleheader,

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin dropped to 5-5 overall and to 1-2 in the MIAA with a 9-0 loss to MIAA
leading Albion Tuesday afternoon at the Calvin tennis courts.
Calvin took two of the three doubles flights to three sets while freshman Amy
Zeilstra (Hinsdale, IL) took her number-two singles match to three sets.
Calvin is scheduled to return to action tomorrow afternoon at defending MIAA
champion St. Mary's in a match slated to start at 3:00 p.m.

MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin improved to 10-3 overall and evened its MIAA mark at 2-2 with an 8-1
victory at Albion Tuesday afternoon.
Calvin swept all three doubles points and took five of six singles points. The
Knights return to action on Saturday when they host Spring Arbor in a
non-conference match at 1:00 p.m.
