CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 22, 2003
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
ATLANTA, GA * Calvin advanced one individual and one relay into Saturday's championship finals with a pair of strong performances in the morning preliminaries.
In the 200 butterfly, Calvin sophomore Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) advanced to the championship finals with a school record time of 1:52.65 that was the seventh-fastest swim of the morning. A year ago, Boumgarden received honorable mention All-America recognition in the 200 butterfly as he took 14th. Boumgarden's time on Saturday morning shattered his previous school record time of 1:53.45 set at the MIAA Championships this past February.
Boumgarden also helped Calvin's 400 freestyle relay advance to the championship finals for the second straight year as the Knights posted the seventh-best time of the morning preliminaries with a 3:05.80 clocking. The time was less than a half-second off the school record time of 3:05.39 set at the 2002 MIAA Championships. Boumgarden was joined on the relay by junior Brad White (Traverse City) and seniors A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven HS).
White also competed in the 100 freestyle prelims Saturday morning but did not advance to the finals or consolation round as he took 18th in 46.54.
Calvin is currently in 11th place with 74 points in the team standings. A year ago, Calvin posted its highest national team finish at the NCAA III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships as the Knights took ninth with 145 points.
