CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 20, 2003 (PART THREE)

    MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

ATLANTA, GA * Calvin came up with three honorable mention All-America performances on the first day of competition at the NCAA III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Emory University. The trio of efforts put the Knights in a tie for 15th place with UW-Stevens Point in the team standings with 21 points. Calvin is one of three MIAA schools in the top-20 as Kalamazoo is eighth with 48 points and Hope 10th with 39 points.

Calvin's 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams both took 12th place while junior Brad White gained an honorable mention All-America citation in the 50 freestyle with a 16th place time of 21.45.

Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of White, sophomore Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL), senior Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven HS) and senior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) clocked in with a 12th place time of 1:25.07 after recording a school record time of 1:24.75 in the morning prelims.

Calvin's 400 medley relay team of White, sophomore Ryan Preston (Richmond, IN), Boumgarden and Penninga clocked a 12th place time of 3:27.82 after recording a time of 3:27.31 in the prelims.

"To be honest, we were hoping for a little more tonight," said Calvin swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "At the same time, we have to be happy with 21 points. Brad was seeded quite a bit lower than 16th heading into the meet as was our 400 medley relay team. We have a number of big events coming up in the next few days and we're hoping to pick up our performance as well."

Scheduled to compete on Friday for Calvin are Boumgarden in the 100 butterfly, Penninga and Johnson in the 200 freestyle and White in the 100 backstroke. In addition, White, Penninga, Johnson and Boumgarden will compete in the 800 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.
