Calvin Sports Report (Part Two) for March 20,
2003
Calvin Softball Team Extends Winning Streak to Six Games
(Report filed by Calvin Sports Information Student Assistant Ross Weener on
assignment in Orlando, Florida).
ORLANDO, FL - Calvin extended its winning streak to six games as the Knights
improved to 6-2 overall. Calvin is off to its best start since 1995 when the
Knights went 7-2 to open the season.
Calvin 11, Augsburg (MN) 3 (five innings)
Behind a strong pitching effort and an explosive offensive attack, Calvin ran
its win streak to five games with an 11-3 victory over Augsburg in five
innings. The Calvin bats were hot, rattling off 11 runs on 11 hits, while the
defense committed no errors in the field.
Sophomore Kara Van Kooten (Grace Christian, Anchorage-AK) earned the win, in
relief of freshman Jill Scholten (Holland Christian), to improve to 1-1 on the
season. Van Kooten pitched 3.1 strong innings only giving up one hit as she
struck out three and walked three.
Offensively, the Knights were led by sophomore speedster Lea Bareman (Unity
Christian) who went 3-4 from the plate with a run scored. The highlight of the
day was a two run tape-measure shot off the bat of junior Rachel Dyksterhouse
(Kalmazoo Christian) who took a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence, for her
fourth career homerun. Senior Sandy VanLeeuwen (Unity Christian) and junior
Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian) each collected two hits.
Leading 6-3 going into the fifth inning the Calvin bats came alive as the
Knights scored five runs on four hits, taking advantage of one Auggies error.
Dyksterhouse started the inning reaching first on an error and she advanced to
second on a sacrifice bunt by Becky Austen (Pembroke, Ontario). Dyksterhouse
plated on an RBI single from VanLeeuwen, and VanLeeuwen scored on an Abby
Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian) double to the gap in left-center. Scholten
walked and Bareman singled to load the bases. Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern)
walked and pushed another run across the plate to make the score 9-3. A
base-loaded double by Balkema scored Scholten and Bareman to end the game at
11-3, a five inning mercy-rule finish.
Calvin 9, Allegheny 1 (six innings)
ORLANDO, FL - Riding the strong right arm of sophomore ace Rachelle Heyboer
(Fremont) the Knights downed Allegheny 9-1, for their second victory over the
Gators in three days. Heyboer went the distance, giving up one run and only two
hits over the duration of the six inning mercy rule shortened game.
Calvin scored nine runs on nine hits, aided in part by three Allegheny errors.
Leading the way for the Knights was sophomore designated hitter Abby Konyndyk
(Grand Rapids Christian), who went 2-4 from the plate with four RBIs. Sophomore
Lea Bareman (Unity Christian) and Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian) each
amassed two hits. Heyboer helped her own cause in the top of the third inning
with the bases loaded, sending a shot through the left side of the infield that
scored two baserunners.
The Knights scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings before
going for three in the sixth inning. Bareman started off the sixth inning
reaching first on an infield single and was pushed to second on a single by
Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern). Balkema then reached first on a fielding
error that scored Bareman from second and advanced Becky Austen (Pembroke,
Ontario), who was pinch running for K. Cole. Dyksterhouse grounded out to the
third baseman scoring Bareman to make it 8-1 and Austen plated on a wild pitch
from the Allegheny pitcher.
Calvin will play again on Friday against UW-Superior and Springfield before
returning home on Saturday evening.
