CALVIN SPORTS REPORT PART ONE FOR MARCH 20, 2003
MEN�S SWIMMING & DIVING
ATLANTA, GA � Calvin opened competition at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving
Championships at Emory University in strong fashion, qualifying two relays and
one individual for Thursday night�s consolation finals.
Calvin�s 200 freestyle relay team of junior Brad White (Traverse City),
sophomore Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) and seniors Ryan Johnson (Grand
Haven HS) and A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian) advanced to the
consolation finals Thursday night with a school record time of 1:24.75 that was
the ninth-best time of the morning preliminaries. The time was four-hundreths
of a second faster than the previous school record and was just three-tenths of
a second away from moving into the championship finals. Calvin�s 200
freestyle relay team had been seeded 20th heading into the morning
preliminaries.
In the 400 medley relay, Calvin�s team of White, sophomore Ryan Preston
(Richmond, IN), Boumgarden and Penninga advanced to the consolation finals with
a time of 3:27.31 that was good for 11th place in the morning preliminaries.
Calvin was seeded 10th heading into the prelims.
Individually, White matched his own school record in the 50 freestyle with a
time of 21.13. White�s time was the 10th-fastest swim of the morning and
advanced him to the consolation finals.
Johnson and Penninga also competed in the 200 IM but did not advance to the
consolation or championship finals. Penninga took 30th with a time of 1:56.26.
He had been seeded 41st. Johnson took 32nd with a time of 1:57.63. He had
been seeded 35th.
�We had a good morning,� said Calvin swim coach Dan Gelderloos. �We are
swimming fast times and we set ourselves up well for tonight. We still have
work to do but if we relax, stay the course and have fun, we�ll do well.�
The championship and consolation finals are scheduled to begin this evening at
6:30 p.m.
