CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 17, 2003

SOFTBALL (Written by Calvin Sports Information Student Assistant Ross Weener on
    Assignment in Orlando, Florida)

    Calvin 6, UW-Platteville 0

ORLANDO, FL - Riding the strong right arm of sophomore pitcher Rachelle Heyboer
(Fremont) and some hot bats Calvin notched its first win of the season, a 6-0
shutout of University of Wisconsin Platteville. Heyboer (1-0) - who earned her
fifth shutout win of her career- gave up only three hits, while walking one and
    striking out five.

The Calvin bats also proved to be dangerous as the Knights banged out six runs
on nine hits. The offensive attack was led by junior Keri Cole (Mason County
Eastern) who went 3-4 from the plate with a pair of doubles. Fellow classmate
Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian) also excelled from behind the plate
    going 2-4 with three RBI's.

The Knights broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning, using a Dyksterhouse
single that scored senior Becky Austen (Pembroke, Ontario) from third base.
Calvin added some insurance in the sixth inning picking up three more runs with
RBI's from Dyksterhouse (1) and two from Lea Bareman (Unity). In the seventh
inning Calvin piled on two more runs using hits by Jeanne Cole (Mason County
Eastern), Alison Dykstra (Illiana Christian), and Dyksterhouse.

    Calvin 8, Allegheny 0

Pitching in her first collegiate softball game freshman Jill Scholten (Holland
Christian) threw a gem, a six-hit shutout of Allegheny, as the Knights
mercy-ruled the Gators 8-0. Scholten, who was able to work herself out of a
first inning base-loaded jam, had help behind her as the Calvin defense yielded
    no errors in the game.

Scholten (1-0) notched her first win of the season as she struck out six and
walked five. She also added a stolen base in a pinch-running role, using her
speed to sneak underneath the tag.

Leading the way offensively for Calvin was Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian)
as she was perfect from the plate going 3-3 and adding two RBI's. Jeanne Cole
(Mason County Eastern) was 3-4 batting with three RBI's and two runs scored.
Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian), Austen, and Keri Cole each added two
hits in the barrage of 14 Calvin hits.

The Knights displayed a balanced scoring attack, gaining two runs in the first,
fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Calvin stranded six runners while Allegheny
left nine runners on base. The Knights also amassed four stolen bases with
their aggressive style of play on the bases.

Calvin will play on Tuesday, March 18 at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.

    BASEBALL

FORT MYERS, FL - Calvin split a doubleheader with nationally-ranked Aurora
University (IL) on Monday, winning the opener 7-1 before falling 7-6 in the
nightcap. Aurora is ranked eighth in the pre-season Division III ABCA Coaches'
poll and ninth in the pre-season Division III poll by the Collegiate Baseball
    Newspaper.

In the opener, Calvin (3-1) rode the arm of freshman righthander Jory Trim as
the Grand Rapids Creston High School product scattered five hits in his first
collegiate start. Freshman Kory Ciecelski (Petoskey HS) came on in relief of
Trim in the seventh to help preserve the win.

Calvin jumped on the Spartans for four runs in the top of the third and added
three more in the fifth to build a commanding seven-run lead. Aurora scored
its lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Terry O'Neal (Muskegon-Reeths
Puffer HS) and sophomore Kyle Neher (Midland HS) picked up two hits apiece in
the win with Nehr collecting an RBI double while O'Neal scored two runs and had
    an RBI.

In game two, Calvin carried a 6-1 lead into the fifth only to see Aurora rally
for three runs in the top of the fifth and then add three more in the sixth to
take a one-run lead. Calvin could not counter in the bottom of the sixth or
seventh as the Spartans held on for the win.

Both teams collected nine hits apiece with freshman Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO)
leading the Knights with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Freshman Kyle
Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) also went 2-for-3 for Calvin with two RBI's and
    two runs scored.

Sophomore Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) got the start and lasted into the
fifth before junior Dean Thompson (Ogemaw Heights HS) came on with two outs.
Freshmen Chris Hinkley () and Ciecelski then came on the sixth and seventh
innings respectively. Thompson (0-1) took the loss, walking one and striking
out none. Deters struck out four and walked two in 4.2 innings of work.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday morning when it faces Augsburg (MN) in a
doubleheader slated to start at 9:00 a.m.

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TENNIS

Both Calvin tennis teams saw their Monday matches haulted by rain in Hilton
Head, South Carolina. The Calvin men were facing Joliet Junior College while
the women were taking on Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Both teams are hoping to complete
    the matches later this week.
